on the CWGC the inscription reads won liverpool scholarship at Queens Road School, dont know how to go about finding out about that but would have thought if he got that then went on to be Survey Labourer, he wouldnt have gone over as a farm boy.....

This article was in The Trove in 1914. I wonder if he went there on a similar sort of scheme.

BOYS FOR NEW ZEALAND.

WELLINGTON (N.Z.), Friday.

Through the generosity of Mr. Sargood à new scheme for bringing English boys out.and giving them a thorough training in farm work will be inaugurated forthwith by Mr T. E. Sedgwick, who has already brought a large number of boys to New Zealand. Mr. Sargood will provide an estate near Lake Wanaka for the purpose, and Is prepared to accommodate a succession of lads on the pro- perty. He recently visited England, and was so struck by tho wretched conditions of living of many of the poor there that lhe determined to glve some boys a chance In a new land. Besides giving the use of the property, Mr. Sargood will advance money where necessary for the passage. The boys will be thoroughly instructed in farming, working limited hours weekly, at a minimum of 7s 6d and found. The boys will be free agents, and able to Ieavo the farm at any time, but a year's training is expected to fit them for work elsewhere.

That would have made him 14yrs. that seems really young. dont suppose there is a way of knowing for certain.

Thanks everyone. I didnt realise that he was in New Zealand when he enlisted. perhaps i should check passenger lists to see when he went there.

Joseph was living in NZ when he enlisted.
He was a Survey Labourer but no address in Nz was provided.
He embarked with his NZ regiment at Wellington on 18 Apr 1916 and was killed 3 Dec 1917
He provided details for his next of Kin: Mrs Annie Morton (Mother) 14 Pickering Street, Liverpool

Hello, I have a relation on my tree called Joseph Morton, born Liverpool 1897 to Benjamin and Annie Morton. I have looked on the commonwealth wargraves website and have found a death for him in WW1. it states he was with the New Zealand expeditionery Force. i have looked on Ancestry and found his war documents for when he enlisted and at the top it says 'foreign service'......can anyone suggest why he would have been selected for the foreign service and where i could obtain his war record from and how much it would cost.

Hoping someone out there can help me.....again.
