Hi Gins,
Thank you so much for your sugestion.
Managed to find 3 reports on the case on the British newspaper archive site and now have the answers to all my questions . Basically she was found guilty and sentenced to 15 month in prison in America.

I think that this case was also reported in the English Press. Can anybody point me towards a good source for researching English papers
Thanks

My relative Betty M Clayton married a GI Douglas William Pitt in 1944 in Epping, she emigrated to America in 26 2 1946 but on arrival his parents insisted that the marriage was annulled and that happened October 1946. She then moved to New York and was arrested and charged in Jan 1947 for stealing 2500 dollars worth of clothes and jewels from hotels . She denied the charges but the case was due to go to court. I can find plenty of articles about her arrest, but nothing on the court case although I have been told by relatives that it was widely published.
I feel that I have hit a brick wall, can anyone sugest any avenues I should try
Thanks
