Hi,
I have been trying to trace my ancestor John Mathews Hawkins he may have been born in Scotland and had a long navy career of over 30 years. I have been able to locate some information but I am struggling to locate his children and his navy service record.
The details I have are:-
Name: John Mathews Hawkins
Born: 1842 (based on aged 26 when he is married in 1868)
Married: Helen Lynch in 1868 in Aberdeen on the marriage certificate he gives his address as “on board battleship Winchester, Aberdeen” his occupation is given as Seaman RN. On the same certificate his parents are shown as Thomas Hawkins and his mother as Sarah Hawkins (nee Dickens).
The only other information I have regarding his Navy career comes from his daughter’s wedding certificate she gets married in 1898 in Lambeth London on this certificate her father is shown as a Quartermaster Sergeant HM Navy.
There is no indication he is deceased when his daughter gets married but as yet I have not found a death certificate so I am assuming he was still alive in 1898 and would have been aged 56.
We know he had at least 2 possibly 3 children.
Helen Elizabeth Mathews Hawkins – based on census information and her marriage certificate she is born in 1869 in Leith, Scotland.
Mary Alice Mathews Hawkins – The assumption is she is younger then Helen we know she was alive in 1898 as she is one of the witnesses at Helen’s wedding.
If there was a third child then he would probably be called John Hawkins.
I am particular interested in finding the navy service record as I believe this may give clues as to where his other children were born and any information about his second daughter Mary.
Any help or advice on where to obtain this information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Andy, if we can place them on a census it will also give us an idea of where his children were born. Have you found them anywhere?
Do you know when/where Helen Lynch was born?

Their marriage here just has him recorded as Matthews - when did Hawkins come into play?

Have you searched The National Archives , they have Royal Navy Records. You can search for free but a charge for downloading documents

Hi Marie,
Helen is the only child I have been able to trace in the census.
1891 Census: Living at: 14 Thurleigh Road, Battersea, London as a general domestic servant aged 22.
1901: 74 Studley Rd, Lambeth, London living with her husband Albert Edward Eyles
1911: 62 Clonmore Street, Southfields, London living with her husband and family
These records suggest she is born in Leith, Scotland which is a harbour port area of Edinburgh.

The Hawkins is now thrown me as well I agree a copy of the original of the parents wedding certificate states Mathews but at some stage they start using “Mathews Hawkins” both daughters on the marriage certificate of Helen and Albert Eyles in 1898 write their names as Helen Elizabeth Mathews Hawkins and Mary Alice Mathews Hawkins and the father is listed as John Hawkins.
So we can try and clear this up can anyone find a birth for John Mathews in 1842 his parents would be Thomas Mathews and Sarah Dickens.
I know from research I have done into John’s wife Helen Lynch she is born in Midlothian, Scotland around 1847 and in the 1861 census she is living at 136 High St, Steven Laws Close, Saint Giles, Midlothian, Scotland with her parents George and Margaret.
