Find Ancestors

Hello MarieCeleste - The earliest one I have found is 1871 when she was living in Neath with her grandmother Gweny Thomas. Her name was then spelt as Gorfet but there are also other variations. Her marriage cert. to Edward Davies in 1882 gives her father as Samuel Gorvet (deceased). The only Samuel Gorvet I could find which fitted in with everything was born in 1842 which wouid make him 19 at the time of Gwenllians birth but I cannot find if he married her .
1861 Census for the said Samuel shows him living in Neath with mother and father William and Eliza. I have made contact with someone with the same Samuel in his tree which I have viewed but there is no Gwenllian mentioned so maybe you could be right about the illegitimacy.

Hello Shirley - one thing to bear in mind is that until 1874-ish there wasn't really any pressure on parents to register births so who knows how many didn't bother.

My personal theory is that it's most likely many of the illegitimate ones that weren't registered.

Fathers on marriage certificates may be fictitious to save face.

Can you give us details of the census you found so we can see if we get anywhere?

Thanks for all the help with GORVET. I am fairly sure that I have now traced her from 1871 - 1901. Now I need help with her birth. She was born 1860-61 but I cannot find her anywhere in the births. Her father's name was Samuel who was deceased by the time she married Edward Davies in 1882 but similarly I cannot find his death reg. One problem is there are different spellings for Gorvet over the years ie. Welsh 'v' is 'f'. Aaaaaagh. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. :-S

There are several birth for Gorvett/s in Neath

Not sure if you are familiar with FamilySearch but there are other Gorvets on there.

There are also some Gorverts on there in USA but born in Wales.

And variations on the spelling you have Gorfett, Garvid, Georvett and Orvett.

What is her birthplace on census after marriage?

What was her father's name on the marriage certificate?

I would be really pleased if someone could help me with the above family. Gwen Gorvet/Gorvert married my Gt. Grandfather Edward Davies in 1882 in Swansea.
She was born c.1861. I cannot find another Gorvet/Gorvert anywhere. Thank you. :-(
