I thought you had his birth cert? how did you no he was illegitimate?

The dates quoted on census details are only approximate dates and are often out by abt 1/2/ or 3 years

St.Mary's is/was the church for Handsworth. Not sure about any others. Some of hubby's lot came from that area.

I'm off out but will come back later or tomorrow and see if I can help.

Some of us are planning another trip into Birmingham to the Central Library but we haven't set a date yet.

If St.Mary's has a film available to look at, we can add it to our list for one of our trips.

Hi Nena

Have double checked all my sources on Family Search, Ancestry etc but can't find any trace of a baptism. According to Birmingham Online Parish Clerks site, St Mary, Handsworth isn't included on the IGI. The Records are however held at Birmingham Central Reference Library, so you could email them to see if someone could do a look-up for you.

There is a Birth Registration for George Stone in Birmingham in 1846. Could this be him? The index number is Jan to March 1846 Volume 16 Page 3526. If you haven't already done so it would be worthwhile sending for that one from the General Record Office and you can do that online (its the Passport Office now)

Also on Ancestry. co I found the index for George Stone (also known as Winnall)'s will which I would be happy to send if you send me your email address.

Hope this helps

Pam

You must bear in mind that until 1875 there were no penalties for not registering births, and illegitimate ones were the most likely to go unrecorded

Worth remembering that c1848 Handsworth was part of the West Bromwich Registration District and came within the Staffordshire South Parliamentary Division.

A birth in Handsworth at the time if registered would have been in West Bromwich, not Birmingham.
