I have the marriage certificate for my second great grandparents JOHN CREW and ELIZA CREW. John I have sucessfully traced back further but I am am having trouble with Eliza before her marriage .
They marry 27/NOV/1870 at Marlowes Chapel in Hemel Hempstead ,Herts. She is 19 years old on the certificate ,down as a Domestic Servant and the place of residence is Bury Mill End ,Hemel Hempstead . Her father is JOSEPH LOCKE a labourer. On census following her marriage she has her place of birth as Evenley in Northamptonshire but in the 1881 and 1891 census she is down as 2 to 3 years older than her husband John yet at time at marriage he is down as 1 year older.I cannot find a birth for Eliza or information on her parents apart from her fathers name .
In 1871 they live in Queen Street Hemel Hempstead Herts
In 1881 they live in Popes Lane
Inn 1891 they live at 9 Corner Hall Boxmoor Hemel Hempstead Herts.

I would be so grateful if anyone could give me further clues.

Bit strange she had different birthplace, but I suppose Northants is more likely, otherwise why put it at all? There are several possible births on Freebmd for Brackley district.
Who are the witnesses on the cert?

Thanks for the information so far ...the witnesses on the wedding certificate are Joseph Gates and Elizabeth Gates.Marlowes chapel was a Baptist chapel.
I have looked at the Caroline and Eliza 1861 census a few times and wondered if that would be her but there is a family in Aylsbury that may fit them too but their Eliza is still with them when mine is married.
On the 1861 I wonder why Caroline is down as daughter in law to Joseph Williams only aged 7.Is it possible this is her family....that Joseph is recorded as Williams.

Daughter-in-law used to mean 'step-daughter' also - SO, she was probably the daughter of Ann, who married Joseph Williams !

Thanks Dea,
So maybe Ann was married previously ...This might fit as Eliza first daughter was named Rose Annie. In this 1861 although Caroline is possibly a daughter Eliza is just listed as a visitor though. Its all a mystery to me especially as I only have a fathers name as Joseph Locke.

I suspect that Eliza will be Ann's sister but I have to go and 'do dinner' just now but will be back on it later !

Dea, Do you think it is possible that this is still Eliza's sister and her parents are John and Sarah?Elizas children repeat some of the names of siblings if so..Edwin, Alfred and( Rose) Ann.Are there any other marriages in the area that would suggest this is another Eliza? The thing is I just dont seem to find any posible father Joseph Lockes around to match mine with.

Eliza - daughter of John & Sarah seems to have married Thomas Ward in 1867 and they are both living with her widowed father on 1871 so NOT the Eliza who married John Crew ................ dratt !!

She still 'might' be the 12 year old on 1861 though ??

I will look further.

FredRogers Report 20 Aug 2012 20:20

Thanks Dea...It seems like Eliza and her father are nowhere to be found .Could there be reasons why she doesnt show up in the census's? Someone did once suggest Locke was a common traveller surname but I dont know .She gets married in a baptist church...could it be that as non comformist thats why her birth is difficult to establish especially how her age is variable in the census's.
