Did he die? Did he jump ship? What ship did he sail on?

James Lowe, my gr-grandfather born 1854 married Alice Cooke in 1883. They had a son born 1884 also named James. They lived in Kingsholm, Gloucester, a poorer area of the City. In 1891 Alice was a housekeeper, James her spouce is not there. Alice married again in1894, she being a widower.

James Lowe (son) married in 1913; on the certificate it states his father is a sailor and dead. Only thing is I can't find a death certificate, if he died at sea where can I look.
What ship did he sail on? Gloucester was a busy port back then and Bristol is only a few miles away.
Last of all where did he come from, all I know is he was born 1854 and is father was John Lowe :-S

There's a deaths at sea index on FMP I think.

The only ones I could find, first two are the same person.
