Can someone else use fresh eyes to help me find my relatives in 1861. Edward (or possibly Edwin) Vaux - born in Newington Surrey in around 1850. His father is dead by this time but I have a death for his mother in 1862 so she is still around somewhere. I can't find her - Frances Vaux born circa 1819 in Newington as Frances Bartrum - either, so it is possible they are still together and their surname has been transcribed incorrectly. I have tried every spelling I can think of and done a search using 'V' only for their surname all without success. Any information or suggestions for alternative spellings is welcome. Thanks

Could not find brother John E Vaux, 1841, in 1861 either.
As mother appears to die in Newington you would think they should be obvious.

Thanks Reggie, GlitterBaby and Ozbird. I am OK with them in 1851 and 1841. As you say 1861 seems to be the problem. Frances, Edward/Edwin and John E all seem to have vanished without trace, all to reappear later in some form, and I am struggling to think of a reason why. As it is, Edwin is known as Edward from his marriage onwards, although why he changed his name is beyond me. His birth is registered as Edwin Bartrum Vaux. I wonder if it was common to use the mother's maiden name as a middle name?
I will keep looking. They must be somewhere!?

That's what I thought Patchem but it seems not!

mo2lly, using relatives' surnames is VERY common, even today.

My ancestors started using mother's maiden name in 1820 and it has been in every generation since.

Benjamin Parry was a neighbour at No 16 Lion St in 1851. He's still there in 1861, but no Vaux family at No. 17.

Have you got the death cert for Frances Vaux? There is a younger Frances Vaux in 1861. It's possible she's the one who died.

Hi OzBird,

I was looking at that Frances Vaux, looks like she was registered as Fanny and was with Elizabeth Vaux, Grandmother and Cordelia Vaux, Aunt in 1851..... she is Frances and John James Francis's daughter.

I think that Selina in 1861 is actually Selina Frazier... I found her in 1851, but as a servant, same birth year and birth place.

According to a few family trees Frances born 1844 married James Swann, although no marriage is found for her.

I've been quietly searching the 1861 census for Frances, John and Edwin and have not turned anything up.

Thanks Oxbird. I had tried the Benjamin Parry/Lion street route myself but with no success. I looked at the younger Frances Vaux and the links to Elizabeth and Cordelia may prove useful.
BatMansDaughter - I spent until about 2 0'clock this morning trying different ways to find them too but frustratingly they seem to have completely vanished. Thanks anyway.
