I think you may well be right on the 1881 census. It would certainly make sense that she was in service. Perhaps she lied about her age or the employers guessed??

I have also tracked down that birth record in Newport for Margaret Crane Leary. Her mother is listed as Ellen Leary but no father's name. Perhaps the 'Crane' was a hint as to the father!, so yes we can rule that out I think.

Finally you asked about the address Margaret gave on her marriage certificate and that was Vicarage Road Sunbury.. John Mahoney was listed as living Green Lane Sunbury, which is where they lived in 1901 and 1911. Keeping things local but not really relevant to my questions above, their daughter that was to be my grandmother married my grandfather another resident of Green Lane.

So unfortunately like me you have not been able to find any possible records for Mary (Margaret's sister) or her mother Johanna O'Leary/Leary or her grandparents John and Mary Daley.

Still hoping for suggestions if anyone likes a challenge!

Yes the Leary/ O'Leary thing is a bit odd but I don't think any O'Leary's show up on census records before 1901.

Thanks for replying. I think I had previously ruled that birth out because someone in the family had shared a copy of it, but perhaps I was wrong to do so. It might take me a while (as I am in my office for a few hours) to see if I have a copy of the certificate, but will report back later if I have.

It's strange in 1911 she gives her place of birth as Sunbury when the 1871 census clearly shows Newport Wales which is why I posted the birth

I have a feeling this one will be tricky due to the Irish connection. I am sure my G-G-Grandmother was Margaret O'Leary born in Wales c1868.

If correct this would suggest Margaret's mother was Johanna Daley and Johanna's parents John and Mary.

I'll post in a follow up the 1911 census, but what I would really hope someone could make some suggestions as to the registration of the births of Margaret and her sister Mary, death of their father Thomas and perhaps marriage but this may have been in Ireland as I don't know when they arrived.

Also I am looking for suggestion as to any other census records for John and Mary Daley as well as Margaret's sister Mary or death/marriage registrations.

I am also unsure where Margaret was in 1881.

I apologise for asking so much but having looked on BMD, GR and Ancestry so many times I am not sure where to go next, and although I am happy to buy certificates would like some more experienced suggestions! :-S
