THOMPSON - LIVERPOOL

Irene Report 12 Aug 2012 18:24

Trying to find information on a very elusive family, the main problem is that from the censuses and the other info I've found (baptism registrations, etc.) they seem to be changing home all the time in the Liverpool area. I have them on the 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871 censuses but I'd really love to know where they were in 1911. I have looked myself but can't find them...maybe I've missed them!

Here is the information so far:

The family

George Henry Thompson (1842)-head
Sarah Ann Braithwaite (1847)-wife

in 1871 living in 27 Victoria St Everton
in 1881 living in 7 Wolseley St West Derby (child Alexander b. 1878)
in 1891 living in 68 Cambrai St Liverpool (another child Daisy Louisa b. 1881)
in 1901 living in 99 Paddington Liverpool (also daughter in law Lily G.)

Can anybody also tell me if it was usual to change home so often and under what circumstances that occurred?

Also looking for George Henry Thompson in previous censuses but no look.

Irene - it was just about the norm! They probably lived at quite a few more addresses between census.

Could be for all sort of reasons - a better house came up at a cheaper rent, they did moonlight flits (very common) and so on.

Anne...I think you might have come up with the correct info as in her 1912 marriage certificate she states she lives at 37 Castor st Everton but then in the 1911 census somebody called Florence Beatrice Conde was living there. I presumed that around 1911 Daisy's mother died and her brother Alexander with his wife Lily G moved elsewhere. Maybe she lived with this friend before she married as her friend's husband was a ship steward and away at sea. Furthermore you found that she was a "clerkess" which fits with the info on her marriage certificate where she states she is a "typist" so presumably she rised fom being a "cigarette maker" to working in an office in the same factory. You found she was living alone in a house? Or was she renting a room or was she in an institution?
Can't find anything for Alexander after 1901.

brummiejan: thanks! information looks a bit confusing as I don't know of any Thomas Thompson or Mary Mellon or Violet Mellon...maybe not the same Sarah?

Irene,
I just noticed that on the 1911 census at 33 Dorset Road, where Daisy was living alone......
She filled the census in herself giving her name as Daisy, but she signed it as Daisy Louisa Thompson.
Looking at the censuses around this, all properties were single houses with individual numbers ( not flatted with shared numbers). She lived alone in a 4 roomed house.

Will PM this

Thanks Anne,

was wondering how she could afford to live in a 4 roomed house on her own...from previous censuses the family didn't seem to be particularly wealthy (although the story goes round that they were and she spent part of her life in India!) as her father was a gunsmith and her brother a barber and she a cigarette maker...I was wondering if you knew how I can find out more about her life those years...would she be in the directories do you think?

Irene

There are no shipping records coming up for Daisy so it looks like she stayed in England.

Maybe it was another family member that travelled?

There's a passenger arrival in Philadelphia for Lily Gloss Thompson 4/8/1907, she is a typist going to friend Mrs Theo Kumpel. States born Ireland, which could explain why no Lily G * registered Birkenhead.

Irene

Irene Report 13 Aug 2012 11:14

Thanks Gins! Must be, mustn't it...I could order death certificate to find out what he died of and who the informant is which will probably be a member of the family.

Thanks Flip I was wondering though...by does she appear to have been born in Birkenhead in the census if she was indeed born in Ireland? Should probably look for marriage certificate although had no luck so far but maybe then they could have married in Ireland.

Flip

Flip Report 13 Aug 2012 12:22

I can't see a birth reg in Birkenhead for Lily G with any surname, nor can I find a local marriage for Alexander Thompson to a Lily during the right time-frame.

The death Gins found may be your man, but there are a few Alexander Thompson births in the area around the same time.

Flip Report 13 Aug 2012 12:43

Is this Alexander's christening? It's just his father is down as Henry George not George Henry:

Alexander Thompson
Birth Date: 3 Jan 1878
Baptism Date: 20 Jan 1878
Parish: Kensington Christ Church <<< Ancestry has this as a Liverpool parish.
Father's Name: Henry George Thompson
Mother's Name: Sarah Anne Thompson

Wonder if this is a possibility....

Reg Dec Quarter West Derby 1900

Thompson *Robert* W. Derby 8b 1044
Wilson *Lily Gertrude* W. Derby 8b 1044

Irene

Irene Report 13 Aug 2012 13:58

Flip: yes that's the christening and I also have his sisters' christenings

Caroline Thompson b. 16/10/1871 (d. 1872) christening 22/10/1871 in St Peter's
Daisy Louisa Thompson b. 06/05/1881 (d. 1958) christening 22/05/1881

parents are the same and father's occupation is "gunsmith" as on marriage certificate of Daisy Thompson.

I've looked everywhere for births/marriages and deaths for a Lily G. and I haven't come up with anything either. Maybe born and married abroad? maybe they were the ones that went to India after all? The other thing that set me thinking is that there is a wide year gap between the birth of the children which might suggest the father George Henry/Henry George away for long periods? Where? He was a gunsmith...was he a merchant?

I don't know! As I said previously a very elusive family! And although I know that family memories should not be relied upon, my mother did grow up with Daisy (her grandmother) and she was often told about India and Daisy's house was full of Indian furniture and she loved to cook Indian food...

Eringobragh: never found him recorded with the second name of Robert...do you think it might be a transcription error? I can't find that they had any children either.
