Find Ancestors

hi my husbands ancestor John Scratsky (known as Jacob) is first listed in the 1901 census. he marries in 1894 in mile end london and had their first son Philip in 1894, can anyone tell me how i find out where he came from (He obviously came from another country) and when, thanks Julia

What does he give as his birthplace on the 1901 census?

just London but I can't find a birth for him or on the earlier census. He was Jewish and the birth might have only been registered in their church but i thought they still had to be registered with the government and I thought everyone had to fill in the census. Julia

If he knew his father's details, they will be on his marriage cert

Until 1875, there were no penalties for NOT registering births....and he seems to have been born before that year

If he and/or his family migrated into the UK from continental Europe, there are unlikely to be any records

I haven't got the marriage certificate but i do know his father was called Issac but I can't find him either. I wondered if there was a register of immigrants coming into the country so I could check on that,

The name has certainly changed over the years.

i think that is half the trouble. they eventually changed their name to Shaw which is even harder to follow.
what i really need to know is if there is a register of immigrants coming into the country anywhere, it looks like they came over in the mid 1880's
I am looking at going into London to follow up some leads on other branches of my tree and thought if there was somewhere I could look that up as well.

thanks, i do have that information and where he was buried in northern france. Soloman was his younger brother who was killed in the 2nd world war. I am really trying to trace where the family were originally from - it looks like Poland/Russia but a name of a town or village would help in finding out why they left, whether due to the persecution of jews in the area or other reasons.
