how do we find out if an ancestor was in a workhouse? thankyou mary

You can search the cenuses up to 1911

If you know which specific workhouse it would be, you can check with the local records office to see if they hold the admission and discharge registers for the years you need.

Bear in mind that if you search the census records, its quite common for inmates to be listed only by their initials.
