If you like a challenge perhaps you can find out what happened to George Harding baptised 1804 Stawell, Somerset. Named as father of Henry Wilcox bap 6th June 1930 at Butleigh, Somerset. Mother Edith Wilcox never married. Father George was a Soldier.
At that time most of our Army was in India.
All my enquiries have led to inconclusion and have searched for years. Any advice or suggestions as to what roads to go down would be helpful. He had not been found on any Census in U.K. and have bought one Burial Notice from India Office of a George Harding but no info.as to who he was. Look forward to hearing from you with any suggestions.

What makes you think George was in India? - plenty of soldiers weren't. How do you know his birthplace and
year of birth?

There were no British Army soldiers in India at that time! After the Battle of Plessey India fell into the grasping hands of Robert Clive and the East India Company which ran India with its own private army until 1857.

Thus you need to go to the archives of the East India company. If yr ancestor was in India as a soldier early C19 then it is possible that there will be records - pay, unit, location etc. The chances of finding them online though are pretty slim.

Hi, sorry about date. finger twitched. I have a burial Cert of a George Harding. Buried 20th August 1838 - Burials within the stations of Mussooree and Landour in the Archdeaconry and Diocese of Calcutta. (cost me £19.00)
Profession Riding Master 3d Cavalry. Buried Landour by Robert Ewing, Chaplain.
It is a Certified Copy with a Seal. Bought from India Office. There is a web-site for India Office but does not give much info. as to what is on Cert.

Nothing to tell me that he is my George Harding as apart from his baptism and presuming he is the father, as villages very close I will probably never know what happened to him.
There are several George Harding's on list.
There is also a Web-site for Cemetery but only info as to officers.
Thank you for your time and interest.
I have followed Edith and Henry on Census but never been in contact with anyone doing research on them.

Rollo

There WERE British Army regiments in India at that time.

You haven't said how you know he was in India. The man you've found buried 1838 could be searched for on the Muster Rolls of the Regiment. His first or last entry may give place of birth.

Otherwise, you really have to know his regiment to find him in other military records.

Thank you Chris, I do have a copy of Baptism and know it was in name of Harden but Father George married in surname of Harding and this family has caused great confusion as to correct surname but it finally settled on Harding later on.
(I think it must have been caused by Somerset accent on registrations)

I have the same problem with the name Davies and David. .Have taken years to untangle

Sorry extensive enquiries on my part have never found his regiment. I have tried.
