On the last of the above threads (posted 2 years ago) Angela has written the following

"I don't know what happened to my grandfather until he turned up in Topsham Devon with my grandmother Edith Annie Beck in 1921. My grandmother was born in Wasperton in 1898 and lived in the area of Ashow and Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. We don't know where or how they met, whether he was still married, seperated or widowed. We believe they ran off together because they went on to have 12 children and didn't marry until 1946. His marriage certificate states he is a widower, but for how long he was a widower we don't know. The only info i have about his first wife Eliza, is when they got married in India. I don't even know if she ever came to England. The whole things a big puzzle"

So if William didn't remarry until 1946, it would appear that he either knew she was still alive until then or he just assumed that she had died by then.

After many years and several £s later i have decided to give up trying to find out what happened to my grand fathers first wife. I have been trying unsuccessfully for many years to find some trace of her but have now had enough and realise it'll be one of those life's little mysteries.

Eliza Marie Bibb (nee Beeby) born in Madras India 20/07/1865 to British parents. Eliza married my grandfather ( William Enis Lawrence ) on 24/04/1912 at St Thomas' Mount Jubbulpore. India. My grandfather was discharged from the Army on 4th July 1916 @ Leamington Spa. Warwickshire. I have a number for him which i believe is his discharge number 14848. I don't know if she stayed in India or came to England, my grand father was quite younger than Eliza, His birth certificate states he was born in 1885.

I would like to thank everyone at Genes reunited for all their kind help, time and effort they have given me over the years in trying to trace Eliza.
