Sorry I should have given that information to start with - the census records confirm that he was born 1862 and in Marylebone - but the census records do differ regarding the age at times.

Would anyone mind having a look on Find My Past at the Military Records to see if anything comes up for a Robert Gay - his marriage certificate in 1884 confirms that he was a Driver in the Royal Artillery - I cannot find anything on Ancestry, the baptism records for 1887 for his first child shows that he is a Master Tailor in the the same regiment.

Any help would be great.
