I am trying to find the parents and siblings of my 2x Great Grandfather,George Mills.As far as I know, he was born in Barnstaple,Devon in 1824. He married Jane King,a local lass,in 1848, in Barnstaple,and they had 3 daughters,Clara Jane,born in 1850,(my Great Grandmother,)Lucy Elizabeth,born 1849,and Alice,born 1855,died 1858.

I haven't found him on the 1841 Census, but he was there on the 1851 Census in Barnstaple,a tea dealer and grocer with his wife and 2 oldest daughters. He was also on the 1851 Census sample, living in the Barnstaple Barn, with his family.

They emigrated from Plymouth to Melbourne,Victoria, Australia, arriving in 1858 on the ship the "Arabian."George and the youngest child,Lucy, died in the same year of their arrival, leaving Jane with 2 little daughters to bring up by herself. In 1859 she remarried,to George Sellin, and had a further 3 children. She died in Melbourne in 1882.

Unfortunately, George's death certificate here in Australia listed George's parents as "unknown". I suspect that George's brother emigrated out here also,as I have been told that there are Mills descendants out here who are related to us through my Great Grandmother,Clara Williams nee Mills.

I seem to be going around in circles, and wonder where I should go from here.If I can order the marriage certificate of George and Jane,is it likely to have the names of his parents on it?

Any advice is welcome,as I'm really not sure which way is the best way to tackle this.

Thank you for reading this.

Margot.

Hello Margot - the marriage certificate should have his father's name and occupation on it (if he knew his father).

Ancestry does not show any links to the 1841..only to his marriage and death - and Jane's re-marriage.

There is nothing for him amongst the parish info available on Ancestry

Dear Christine,

I'm not really sure about the birth year for George,I'm just going by his age on the 1851 Census, and the information on the Passenger shipping records.I have tried to find his birth details- and those of his siblings-but have met with a blank-Hugh Wallis IGI records have nothing, although there is a lot of information on Jane King's family. You're right-the records on Ancestry have nothing either.I was thinking that I would have to use the atlas, and go outwards in a circle ,searching the births in the Parish records from place to place.I may still have to do that, assuming of course that his birth was recorded!

Many thanks for your help.

Margot.

Dear Christine,

Many, many thanks for your birth information re: George Mills.Humphry Mills and Sarah Eastaway were his parents-from that record I have been able to go back and do some more research, and find their date of marriage, their children, and
Humphry Mills family in South Molton, Devon, which is not very far from Barnstaple.Your record acted like a springboard for my further investigation into George's family, and I now feel that I can see him as part of a loving,close-knit family. It sounds corny but it's true! That record unlocked the puzzle of George's birth for me,and helped to smash that brick wall.

Thank you so, so much,I will be forever grateful . :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
