The census will not tell you when she died but it will give you an idea as to the rough timescale.

In 1881 they are in Barracks in Chad in Shropshire with a son John born 1879 in Aldershot. John Senior is a soldier born Church Stretton in 1843.

In 1891 John is alone with the two boys in Little Bolton Lancashire. Patrick born 1881 Shrewsbury. John states he is married but there is no sign of Catherine.

By 1901 John senior is declaring himself as single.

It looks very much as if Catherine has left him so she may be living with someone else and have taken his name in which case she will be very difficult to find or she may just be working elsewhere. The problem is that there are so many Catherine's born in Ireland in or around 1857 it's a nigh on impossible task.

There is a Catherine Lewis who is a prisoner in Preston in 1891 born Ireland 1859 which could be her.

At what point did you find her in Blackburn?
