Jesse was on the 1891 census as a Boarder with the Jameson's in Armley, Leeds. Jesse's age given as 24 meaning he would be born about 1867 in Leeds according to the census.
Jesse married Annie Rusby 9 Dec 1893 at Leeds Parish Church. I have their marriage cert. which states his father was William Longbottom occp. Engineer.
I have been unable to find a birth record for Jesse or his whereabouts in 1871 or 1881, can't see him on either census.
There is a William(1841) on the 1871/1881/1891 who's occupation is 'Tool Fitter', but there is no mention of a Jesse amongst his children.
Help in tracing Jesse would be appreciated.
Ian

Ian, I just put that so others would not try and find him in 1901, as that could give more information - such as whether he had changed his birth year or birth place between censuses. He is an iron worker on his marriage certificate, and a tailor in the 1891 census.
At the moment I cannot decide whether any of the information is true. Have you got his death certificate?
Added: Not his family as witnesses - John Clarkson and Mary Jane Rusby.

Regret I haven't got Jesse's death certificate. On the burial records it just shows his age, 33 years 7 months, date of burial and occupation 'Shovel Maker'.
The witness Mary Jane was Annie's sister, as far as I know John Clarkson un-related.

That's a brilliant find Choccy. Having looked at the image, according to this the above Jesse was born in Wakefield. Jan

Hi Choccy,
I've followed that Jesse through and the census records state that William was a 'Horse Driver' even in 1891 so hardly likely to become an 'Engineer' in a couple of years??
It did look interesting but for the occupation. In one of the records on Ancestry Jesse's middle name in that family is given as 'Speight'.
Perhaps we'll never know.
Thanks all the same,
Ian
p.s. have to out now will be back on later in the day.

Im not sure you should take much notice of the occupation given on the marriage certificate for Jess*, it may well have been 'made up'
I cant see the son of an engineer having the occupations that have been given so far?

I haven't found a family connection yet, but don't forget that Choccy found that Jesse Longbottom living with a Crossland family on the 1871 census.

Hi Gins,
I can see your point re the occupation/s. I can't see why Jesse would have to lie as the area he and Annie were living in was not what you might call "posh" and the family weren't wealthy.
Christina, I hadn't 100% discarded the Wakefield family and will look a bit further into that one. People did alter their names around as I have found out previously in my research.
Back burner for now and thank you all for your help,
Cheers,
Ian

Ian, re. 'lying' about father. I have seen this more than once, and usually applies to the more humble folks, and most often when a child was illegitimate - if you are making up a father, you might as well do it properly! My favourite is a relation who was a tool fitter and put his father as 'Alexander Longfield auctioneer'. That led me a merry dance I can tell you. The alarm bells should have rung straight away really. It turns out he was the illegitimate son of a poor Irish girl, no father in sight. Jan
