if no father is shown on his birth cert then he would seem to be illegitimate. Often a deceased fathers name was given on a marriage cert to save face

I am trying to find the father of Henry Houchin.

Henry is the father of my brother-in-law.

He was born on 12 June 1889 at Poplar in London. Henry’s birth certificate shows his mother as Phoebe Celia Houchin. No details of the father are given. Phoebe Celia Houchin was born in 1868 the daughter of George and Elizabeth Houchin. She was born at 30 Hewlett Road Bow London.

In 1915 Henry married Helen Mason and his marriage certificate shows his father as Frank Houchin, Ships Carpenter deceased.

I have found a record for a Frank Houchin who was born in Ongar Essex in 1867, the year before Phoebe. I have a note that Frank’s father was Charles Houchin and his mother Rhoda Houchin. I also have a note that George and Elizabeth were born in Norfolk and I have found a record (on Ancestry.co.uk) of a Charles and Rhoda Houchin, this Charles also being born in Norfolk. According to this (census) record Charles was also living in Ongar in 1881.

So we appear to have a George Houchin father of Phoebe and a Charles Houchin father of Frank both born in Norfolk: George b about 1825 and Charles b about 1834.

I would like to find out - were these two related? If Charles and George were brothers (for example) then it’s likely that Frank and Phoebe knew each other. This certainly raises the possibility that Frank was the father of Phoebe’s child Henry i.e. that Henry’s father was his mother’s cousin.

I would be very grateful if anyone could assist with this one. Many Thanks
