thanks mgnv

I thought that was probably the church meant by 'the parish church' on the certificate

The brides family came from Old Royd in Langfield. Marmaduke also was living in Causey Wood, Langfield which I thought was in the parish of Halifax rather than Rochdale.

Langfield, Stansfield and Heptonstall were classed as Yorkshire in the 1841 census and the rest of Tod as Lancashire. Makes for confusing interpretation of 'born in county'!

Incidentally, St John the Baptist is the parish church of Halifax - the parish did extend into Todmorden RD, although it was chiefly in Halifax RD. You can read this in Lewis (1848):

maybe he had to be baptised to be buried in his churchyard of choice?

just seen your edits Tempest - thanks

it is definitely the right person. I wonder if he had a religious moment when he was diagnosed with cancer.

By then he was married with 7 children

no wonder I never found that baptism on looking at parish records in Todmorden - it was only 6 months before he died!
