William Thompson 1786 Chatham

Can anyone please help with the above mentioned. I have spent days trying to fathom out his family line! I believe William was christened on 6th August 1786 to parents William & Mary Thompson.

I have found William in the 1841 census in Chatham, Kent with children John, Henry, Ann, Elizabeth, Mary & Rebecca. Other than this I can find no trace of any of these people. I have searched for all of them individually. There is no mother listed in the 1841 census with them and I can find no marriage for William Thompson. I have found details for a William Tomson born in Teynham in 1785 who seems to have married a lady called Sarah. I have seen other trees where these families have crossed and merged into one but I believe them to be separate as there are christenings listed for both of these Williams.

I did find a christening record for Rebecca and her parents were listed as William and Mary.

Otherwise I am stumped. Could anyone perhaps more experienced than myself help or suggested what I could do next please? William's son Henry (abt 1815) is my pedigree line. Kind regards, Michelle

Hi Ann, thanks for your quick reply. I don't yet have a concrete name for William's wife. I found my Henry (williams son) in the 1841 census with William as his dad but no mother. I think I have seen this Passmore marriage but can't seem to find anything that I feel fits. I found Williams daughter Rebecca on the 1841 census with him and a christening record for her which lists her parents as William and Mary so I was initially looking for a marriage with those names. I went down the route of also looking for Williams other children in other census records etc but they seemt o have disapeared. I don't understand why I can find no info on them. I assume their mother died before 1841 and thats why she was not on the census. Do you think looking female Thompson death before 1841 which an age that makes her born around the same time as William 1786 might help to eliminate or confirm? Kind regards, Michelle

Many of the Medway City Ark records are being transcribed onto http://www.freereg.org.uk/

it's a great 'finding' tool and will often give more details than the familysearch transcription.

If something relevant is listed (and it is still a work in progress) then it would help you to narrow down your search parameters on CityArk images.
