I haven't seen the 1802 image - this is Charles Tillotson I presume, not Charles Oswin? Interesting then that there was quite a gap before the Nov baptism. If Eliza did come from Yorkshire, would she have stayed in Southgate that long after giving birth? Or would she stay until she had found someone to take the child? So many questions! |

Interesting. I'm probably barking up completely the wrong tree, putting together the right place and date of birth (well, baptism anyway), the same Christian name, and an unmarried mother. No northern connections at all that I've found. Charles Esq's father was the Rev Richard Oswin, vicar in various Cambrdgeshire parishes, but he came from London and I think I've found his father and grandfather, also all London. |

I've got Charles Oswin of Harley Street (c1802-1890) and all his family, and I know where he was pretty much all the time - just don't know who he was when he was born! Or when he was adopted, and why. |

Charles Esq married Mary Catharine Smith in 1816, and he was a bachelor and she was a spinster. No children apparently as his will of 1831 leaves property to his brother, nieces, sisters, and the children of his adopted son Charles. And Charles Esq spent much of his time in Jamaica between about 1790 and 1825. Mary died in 1859, so definitely no other wives for Charles Esq (unless he was lying and he wasn't a bachelor - he wouldn't be the first in our family to do that!) |

Have you tried to establish a link between Eliza and Charles Esq? Is there anything to suggest that they married at some point? |

I have just discovered that my 3 x great grandfather Charles Oswin (born Southgate, Middx circa 1802) was the adopted son of Charles Oswin Esq, not the actual son. Looking for a possible real name for him I found Charles Tillotson on IGI, bp 11 Nov 1802 Edmonton, Middx, mother Eliza Tillotson. A quick look at 1841 and 1851 on GR doesn't come up with Charles Tillotson. I'm clutching at straws I know, but if Charles Tillotson could be located it would rule him out as a possible identity for my Charles. If on the other hand he vanishes, then he remains a possibility. Any help gratefully received. Thanks. |
