Chris - pre 1898, it wasn' just RCs. Only C of E, jews & quakers (plus the registrars) were trusted to keep official marr regos. If you had a non-conformist marr, then the registrar had to attend with his official register.
This changed in 1898, and others were approved to keep official regos (except RCs, who only got approval in the 1980s).
I'm wondering if Holloway is a mistranscription of Halliwell, just NW of Bolton town. I can see how a double l might be thought to be the forks of the y, especially if the supposed descender of the y is obscured/supplied by an ascender on the following line. (I don't have easy access to the image).

Halliwell was a parish by the 1850s, but in 1808, I think it was just a chapelry in the parish of Deane.

Many thanks for all the information. I will apply for a copy of John & Rebecca's marriage certificate. I have traced all the family baptisms for the family from William forward on the excellent Lancashire on line website. I was having difficulty tracing John and the 1851 census lists Rebecca as having come from Holloway?, Lancashire. I'm not sure about the religious denomination of John and his immediate family. I do know that William married into a Methodist family (Rushforth) and this branch of the family were connected with Fletcher St, Methodist Church, Bolton up to the 1920s. It was my grandfather's generation that seemed to have moved about the most as he died in South Africa.

Mike - you're right - my post was sloppily worded. Great Bolton didn't start getting parishes until the 1840s, and then they were named after the church (e.g., Emanuel as in 1851).
Back in 1808, Gt Bolton was part of the one ancient parish - Bolton-le-Moors - whose parish church (St Peters) was in Gt Bolton.

LanAnn - I don't have access either, but when jax gives the census ref [ho107/2210/614/16] I can enter that on Ancestry's old style search, and guess the relationships in turn (Head, Wife, Stepdaughter, Daughter, Son, Son).
This time it was slightly more complicated, as only John is on page 16, the rest are on page 17.
The next page will have the same folio #, or else one higher - this time it's ho107/2210/614/17.
I can just leave the page off and search both pages of folio 614 at once.
I can also try to guess pob - they're all born in Lancs, and John & the 3 young kids are all born in Gt Bolton. (Guessing Bolton gets Little Bolton hits also).
I don't know where Rebecca and Ellen were born.

Seeing as their marr is recorded in the registrar's own rego, maybe it was an RC marr (like my Aspinall's in Wigan, just down the road). Since RC regos are less well covered, maybe this is why there's bother locating hits for them.

Im wondering if Rebecca had Ann Pollitt and ran off and left William?

There is also an Ann on family search baptised 5-8-1838 at St Peter's Bolton - daughter of a John & Alice

I don't have access to see the actual relationships on the 1851

Gee

Could be Ann

Or could she have been a Pollitt and turned Aspinwall

These Ann's are so much trouble ;-)

I think it likely that that Ann is the daughter of this couple as the Ann in the census would have been born before 1840

This looks like Ann who is on the 1851 census that Jax posted, so her mother looks to be born Rebecca Mather

Edit: Or looking at Malcolms post, I wonder if Mather should be Martin :-S

Great Bolton was a township of the civil and ecclesiastical parish of Bolton le Moors in the Salford hundred of Lancashire.
Not to be confused with the town of Bolton

Seems a bit odd? Did Rebecca marry bigamously as this looks like it could be her daughter in 1841 and Rebecca is with John in the 1841 census?

Then this death is possibly the William above, which might explain why Elizabeth is with her mother in 1851? Little Ellen seems to be in service with a Silverwood family in 1851, not looked for Hannah as yet

Just speculation at the moment but it might be worth having a dig around?

Be interested to see his death certificate!

The 1851 census says which parish he claims he was born in.I don't know how much more specific result you were expecting.

His marr record is easy, but since it was either a rego office marr, or a non-conformist marr that the registrar had to attend so they could sign his official register, you'll need to purchase the m.cert from either Bolton or the GRO.

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1840

ASPINALL John POLLITT Rebecca Bolton Register Office or Registrar Attended Bolton RO/2/57

Most local indexes use the entry # in the ref for marrs (so one knows who wed whom, even pre-1912), but for B's & D's the might use the local page # or the entry #. These local regos always had 5 entries per page and 100 pages in a rego. So we know John's ref below is an entry #,and it reveals the index compiler couldn't decide whether Rebecca's MS was Polllitt or Martin, so they had to index both names. With John's step-daur named on census, sort of a big hint her MS was really Martin, eh.

Chris Report 26 Jul 2012 01:19

I'm trying to find out where John Aspinwall, weaver, residing in Pilkington St, Bolton according to 1841 census originated. The census records he was living with a wife Rebecca, one step daughter and two children, Ann Aspinwall and John Aspinwall. A second son William Aspinwall was born 4 years later. I can't seem to find any record of John Aspinwall's marriage or baptism details for his children.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Chris
