Catherine Report 25 Jul 2012 12:36

Yes Janette you are answering in the correct place.
Will post your pm's for other helpers to see.

1/ morning Catherine, Almost certain as the names and ages all fit-and 4 yrs later they all emigrated to N.Z

2/ i think this is him-although I have always wondered about 1815-i really think it should be 1816

so that 1871 census is the right Robert as this is his marriage

Year of registration: 1869
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912

spouse WILLSHIRE, Louisa

so Ellen is living with them in 1871 and is a widow

Janette

ages on any census are never precise .......... it depends on the date when the census was held, vs the date on which a person was born.

The Census asked for the age of a person at midnight on a certain date.

The later transcribers (for ancestry, fmp, etc) translate that age into estimated birth year.

and that is how the discrepancy occurs.

Birth years on some censuses may be as much as 2 years out.

Plus, there is the fact that many people did not know exactly how old they were, and sometimes not even the year.
