Help with finding my relatives on 1891 census

Cindy Report 25 Jul 2012 10:42

I am trying, and failing, to locate my Great Great Grandfather and his family on the 1891 Census ~ Can anyone help please?

I am looking for James Tanner (b23rd April 1875 Ramsgate) and Lucy Tanner nee Cox (b12th September 1859 Birkenhead although 1881 census says Portsea)

In 1891 they should have four/five children Kate (b1878), Alice (b1880), Edith (b1885), Lucy (b1889) and Hilda (b1890). I understand my Great Grandfather Henry James (b15.12.1891) was born after the census was taken.

I found them on the 1881 census and they are living in Portsea, Portsmouth, hampshire with the Waldegrave family (who I know is Lucy's Uncle ~ he was a witness at James and Lucys wedding on 2nd July 1877 at the Register Office in Portsea.

I hope I have given enough information?. I have searched and searched and tried all sorts of combinations and come up with nothing. I have also contacted people on here with James as a relative but none are a direct descendent so can't help.

Thank you in anticipation :-D

Where did you find any of them in 1901?
James cannot have been born in 1875. 1857?

Added:
They are in Portsmouth in 1901, for info.

Before I start looking Cindy - could you just confirm James's year of birth for me please?

You have said above 1875 but I don't think this is correct in view of the dates you have given for his wife and children??

Thanks,

Dea x

Jonesey - You have marked James as a 'hat maker' on 1891 - wasn't he a dock labourer??? Or were my eyes deceiving me ?

Dea,

No yours weren't but mine obviously were. His occupation was described as a hatter in 1881 and I have misread the second word in the occupation column in 1891 as Hat. I could not read the last word and assumed it to be part of the process of hat manufacturing.

I have now enlarged the entry and it looks like " Labourer Hel? Grain Wharf". I have corrected my earlier post.

You lot are AMAZING!! Even with my silly typo with James DOB you have tracked them down. How did you do it?

Jonesey ~ I think it should say 'Gun Wharf' which was part of the HM Dockyard at Portsmouth (Its now a shopping centre!)

Thank you so much to you all ~ I wished I had asked for help earlier! :-D

Cindy,
I used Ancestry. I knew they had to be mistranscribed.
I simply searched 1891 without a surname
Lucy b 1861 with a husband called James and stuck in one or two of the childrens names.

The" Farner" census was top of the results list

Thank Anne ~ I will remember this in the future.

I'm still fairly new to the family research thing and I am quickly learning that everything is not also straightforward or even correct!

Thanks again for your help.
