"The next puzzle is why would a Scotsman get married at Stamford in Lincolnshire to a girl with a "continental" name, and the move to Salford?"

To keep you thinking outside the box!

It keeps the grey cells in gear doesn't it!!!!!!!!!

Hi Alan,

I found that marriage on Familysearch but it came up with three returns. Two of them had Saille as her surname but the third had Sailes.

I have no idea why but if you think in a French accent for example, they would sound the same.

If you search for that marriage on James' name and the date you should get the same results I did.

From Alan:

Thanks for your info on James
I am curious about your statement
"One entry of this marriage has Sailes"

Mark
Many thanks for all your efforts.
As I indicated earlier the 18414 census listed James as being from Scotland.
It is only by subtracting his age at death from the date of death that a possible birth year can be established. The place or Parish is then down to guesswork. Scotlands People can provide one or two names. How then do you prove the true identity?
The next puzzle is why would a Scotsman get married at Stamford in Lincolnshire to a girl with a "continental" name, and the move to Salford ?

There are many James Jarvis born c 1778.
Without any other deatils it would be rash to pinpoint one of them.

When was he living in Salford?
Who was he living with?
Does it give a county of birth?
When did he die?
