Civil Registration for BMD didn't start until the Sept quarter 1837, so yes, your best way backwards is via parish records. Even in 1837, registering births and deaths wasn't compulsary.

Your OP says that John married 'a Mary'. if you don't know her maiden name, you could purchase a birth certificate for one of the younger children.

Look on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ for the reference number then purchase from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Of course, you may find a record of the marriage on the cfhs site!

Benjamin and Mary are next door on 1841...

CFHS have Baptisms and Burials on that link 1801 - 1837, some are on Find My Past (not seeing Barton though) or you could try below, as mentioned by Detective earlier.

Researching the Beard family and have currently got as far back as a

John Beard 1810 married a Mary

The cambridgeshire area

Looking for Johns dad.. But have seem to have come to a dead end as the records seem to not go that far back?

anyone know where i can access more records somewhere? or get round this problem?

any help would be great
