Funny you should say that....

It looks as though his parents??(or just mother and some sibs??) went there first. Again one asks why???

Avid curlers???? ;-)

Hi mgnv

Thurston and his wife and family went to join his mother and siblings who travelled to Canada in May 1906

"join his mother and siblings" - so I expect Christine has this, but for background.
Christine makes it sound like mum's a widow - so it explains Thurston, but just bumps my query up to why did Jane pick Moosomin - more rellies?

OK - if you've a relly who's a postmaster, you can learn his tenure, but the most use I've found for this database is that it gives the Dominion Land Survey reference for prairie PO's.
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/post-offices/001001-100.01-e.php
Moosomin Sec.4, Twp.14, R.31, W1 - 1882-11-01
Marchwell SK Sec.15, Twp. 21, R.30, WPM - 1907-09-01
Harrowby MB Sec. 28, Twp. 20, R. 29, W1 - 1888-04-01
Whitewood Sec.7, Twp.16, R.2, W2 - 1883-11-09

In the extreme N, the 2nd meridian is the SK-MB border. Further S, it's the township line between Ranges 29 & 30.
If you look at an atlas, you can see the jogs in the border every 24 miles down south.
The prime (1st) meridian is a true N-S line (they all are) - R29/R30 is 29*6=174 miles (+ road allowances) east of this.
Allowance was made for the earth's curvature. The meridians are 29% closer at the province's N border compared with the S border.
For section numbering, see e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Land_Survey

I mention this as the reason most folks went to SK in the pre-WW1 was for the free land.
You paid a $10 filing fee to file a homestead claim. To prove a claim, you had to live on the land for 3 y, erect a dwelling, and get 40 acres under crop.
When your claim was verified, you got letters patent (i.e., title) on it.
The standard claim was for a quarter section (i.e., 160 acres).
You can search at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/western-land-grants/index-e.html

Here's a nearby hit - don't know that he's owt to do with your mob - just wanted an example:

This quarter-section is 4 m W and 9 m S of Moosomin.
There's an image of the letters patent dated 8/7/1892, but there isn't always.

Re: Christine's "his mother and siblings who travelled to Canada in May 1906"

Well, I put this off as it's a pain with no sub.
What I have to do is do a free look up on Ancestry, find the family, pin down the year,
guess the ports - for this family, they would leave via Liverpool.
They would arrive at StJohn, Halifax, Montreal or Quebec. For Sask in May, it would be one of the latter 2.
Next I guess the ship (Lake*, Emp*, *ian, *ion, *tic gets a lot of them).
This ship made 7 voyages with 1000 passengers per trip - a lot of names to browse - even knowing it's May leaves a lot of work.

View Image
Ship: EMPRESS OF BRITAIN
Shipping Line: Canadian Pacific Railway Co.
Departure Port and Date (yyyy/mm/dd): Liverpool, England - 1906-05-05
Port and Date of Arrival: Quebec, Que. - 1906-05-13
Remarks: List Number: 513499, Ship arrived in port 1906-05-12
List includes: Mrs. Fegan's party for Toronto
Reference: RG 76
Microfilm: T-486

I can take the View Image link, then go to page 16 of 36, but the LAC images are of lower res than Ancestry's, and hard to read.
Anyways, not all of Thurston's sibs are there - Wm's missing, but we know he's there in July when they were enumerated.
It makes sense to me that Wm would come out first, get things sorted, then send for family.
Now it's too hard for me to find an earlier voyage for Wm.
In any case, I still think Moosomin's an odd place to come to, so I still suspect rellies in area.

There's only one 1961 Alice Carter in BC
http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-2057952/gbsearch/Births,Marriages,Deaths
Name:Alice Carter
Place:Vancouver
Reg. Number:1961-09-011081 Copy Available
Date:1961 9 28 (Yr/Mo/Day)
Age:82
Event:Death
Microfilm #:B13253 (GSU # 2033374)

Of course, I can't say she's our Alice - I'm just working off Maureen's Rootsweb thread.

Normally I use http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gs&
or (for BC): http://bccfa.islandnet.com//homepage.html
But if she's buried in Vancouver, it has to be Mountain View:

Try contacting the 2 posters on Maureen's thread - they might have the same email addy (or have kept the site updated).

No hit at CWGC, so check - Genealogy Chat : Canadian Death Cards of Veterans
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1304077

There is a death record (1007-8 of 1275) of a Lt Carter (5th Bn CEF) d 1/10/1924.
(He follows Sydney Carter & preceeds Thomas Carter)
I think as he's an officer, no service # appears on his record.
However, the initial addy is Ft Qu'Appelle SK (x-ed out & replaced by Whitewood SK)
NOK=widow Mrs RM Carter Box 52 Whitewood SK (x-ed out & replaced by Tottenham).
Don't know if this is our Thos - you'ld probably need his service record to see if he made Lt.
(See Search Help link on CEF attestation URL also on search help is link to war diaries).

War Diaries - you really want to see the service record to see what time he joined the battalion in France. (This will be several months after he enlisted) Sometimes (infrequently) you'll need to check the higher level units - for the 5th Bn, these were the 2nd (infatry) Brigade and the 1st (Canadian) Division The higher units would be more relevant if he were wounded in some big battle. They would outline the medical arrangements for the battle, like the Casualty Clearing Stations available to the Regimental Aid Post. These tended to specialize like (I'm making this up - head wounds - 1st Canadian; Gun Shot Wounds - 1st Australian; gassing - 9th British, etc.)
