MGNV and Sally, thank you for your ideas. The Alperton cemetery comes under Brent and so far nothing there for James Wyse Maxwell. I have taken a quick look at Hendon; it must be worth a try, and will ring them/LB Barnet Cemeteries dept during the week. Find A Grave suggests just 338 Interments in Hendon but I would have expected more than that in truth. Thank you :-)

What was his exact residential address at the time of his death?

I think in 1940, the only cemetery in Wembley was Alperton, abt 5 min walk from the tube station. There were burials in the church yard on the High St, but they were probably full by 1940.

Depending on where he lived, it might be worth contacting one of the adjacent boroughs - Ealing, Harrow, Barnet. (The other adjacent borough was Willesden - the southern part of Brent). There were a couple of areas in Wembley where Greenford Park on Greenford Rd or Acton (by N Acton central line tube) were reasonably accessible, but in both cases Alperton would be equally or more accessible, so I`ld downgrade Ealing.

Have you tracked down a will for him? Might be some clues there, if he had one.

I often wander how many people have their ashes scattered somewhere meaningful, or how many spouses store their significant other's urns on the mantle.

Hi Gins
The local archive search for Wembley and other local areas (London Borough of Brent) I have checked already, very helpful they were too. Not sure which cemetery elsewhere to look for though... I haven't been able to trace his burial service either yet. Thanks for the idea though, I need to find a listing somewhere of cemeteries active in 1940 in Wembley area. Already checked undertakers of the time too, through contacts of the local funeral director whose firm buried my parents when they deceased.
As ever, all ideas most helpful.

Hi David

The local council archives (to where he died) will undertake a search for you of the municipal cemeteries in the area

Some charge a small fee, some will do it for free

Hi Gins, As far as I am aware the family 'plot' is likely to have been the graveyard in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, where his parents are buried and some of his siblings. However I have not found a record of his burial there, and in wartime, might the family have preferred a grave 'closer to home' especially as the daughter was buried 'locally'?
Thanks though - I appreciate being made to justify my own thinking.

Wartime must have been difficult for burial, Gwyn. I appreciate your reply as it kind of confirms my own belief that he will be buried somewhere 'local'. Thank you.

Hi Shirley, thanks for the reply. The Daily Telegraph announcement was put in by me to mark the 50th anniversary of my dad's death. More recent deceased members of the family in the Harrow/Wembley area have been buried at Carpenders Park, administered by the London Borough of Brent.
I'm glad you like the picture :-)
Thanks for the feedback.

I too wondered about cremation, but thought his widow might not wish that.

In wartime one would think he was buried not too far from place of death.

Sorry, I don't know the area to be able to advise sites.

Fair point, but there is no tradition of that in the family, nor do I think it likely given religious attitude at that time. But thank you for the reply.

He could have been cremated

Or was there a family 'plot' in Scotland?

David

David Report 14 Jul 2012 12:36

My grandfather died in September 1940 and I have been looking for his burial place but without much success. James Wyse Maxwell was a member of the Free Church of Scotland, married a Catholic, and the children were brought up Catholic. His wife (died 1950), daughter (died 1920) and father-in-law (died 1927) are all buried in the same grave in St Mary's Cemetery, Kensal Green. I have been reliably informed that he is not buried in that cemetery nor indeed in the next door Kensal Green Cemetery. There is no record of his burial in the London Borough of Brent records, and he was not buried in his family grave, Maxwell Free Church, Kilmaurs, Ayrshire. No record yet in Deceased online, nor any luck through Genes Reunited, Ancestry, nor Findmypast. Family moved to Wembley in 1939, living previously in Brondesbury (NW London) from 1929 to 1939, and Paddington before that.
What am I missing? Any advice welcomed.
Thank you.
David
