I wonder if Agnes was travelling back to Canada in 1937 because she was due to have a child and wanted the child to be born in Canda?

From the 1911 census posted by mgnv, it looks as if there was an older brother Eric. Googling for the name Eric Stagg Canada provided some info (website see below), which has an address and phone number for an Eric Stagg - unlikely to be the one on the census, but perhaps a nephew of George since the address is in Ontario.

Perhaps worth following up if you are looking for living relatives?

Assuming Montreal was just her port of entry, and she carried on to Ontario, then you start running into Ontario`s closure periods on BMDs of 97/82/70 y
(strictly deaths are not closed, but no index is published for 70 y).
Ancestry has ON marrs to 1928. By now, 1929 are released, but I don`t know if they`re indexed yet by the Archives of Ontario.

The George James Stagg arriving in Quebec in 1926 was aged 20, born Freeman, Ontario, Canada and was returning to rejoin R.C.Navy.

Thanks for the info - it seems there are a couple of eligible George Staggs. I am leaning more towards the naval George though purely because of the list showing this George with an Agnes of the correct age and with the Canadian link.

You mention that your George Stagg may be George James A Stagg; if so, that would distinguish him from the George John Alan Stagg born in Birmingham (England) to George and Mary Stagg, who is in Birmingham in 1911:

Googling for George J A Stagg identifies a funeral director's listing in Vancouver, stating only:

Ancestry records of arrivals in the UK in 1936 confirm the details you gave above for George and Agnes (George age 29, so born approximately 1907); intended address in England to be HMS Vernon, Portsmouth.

George's occupation is given as R C Navy (Royal Canadian Navy?)

Wikipedia gives further information about HMS Vernon between the wars - it seems to have been a permanent onshore research/workshop establishment:

"On 1 October 1923 Vernon was moved ashore and new departments were set up to cover aspects of maritime warfare, such as mining, torpedoes and electrical equipment. The names of the original hulks that made up the floating Vernon were used for buildings in the base......

Portsmouth suffered heavy air raids during the war, with Vernon being hit several times. One bomb demolished Dido Building and killed 100 people. Subsequently, sections of Vernon were dispersed to quieter areas. On 3 May 1941 most departments of Vernon were moved to Roedean School at Brighton, which was known as HMS Vernon(R), whilst other elements were relocated elsewhere on the south coast and further away."

This could be just a big coincidence and doesn't answer your immediate question, but a George J.A. Stagg born 1907 sailed to Brisbane, Australia from London in 1923.

I am turning to you wonderful people again in the hope you can help me find some relations of my father.

AGNES ORR McMEEKIN was born in Greenock, Scotland on March 13th 1911 to parents Peter McMeekin and Margaret Boyle Leith.

(Her sister Margaret Lilian McMeekin is my paternal grandmother)

She emigrated with her father to Montreal, Canada in May 1924. (Her sister and step-mother, Marion McMeekin follow in July).

I have recently discovered she married a man named GEORGE J.A. STAGG possibly around June 1935 in Hamilton, Ontario.

I found a passenger list departing from New York with a George Stagg & Agnes Stagg - arriving in Liverpool on Feb 3 1936, with Portsmouth as the destination. Agnes' age is correct to her birth certificate as is the previous country of residence.

Assuming that information is correct and said George is correct and listed as in the Navy , I then managed to find some passenger lists for George (possibly George James A Stagg) showing he served on HMS Vernon stationed at Portsmouth.

However, I cannot find anything for either of them after the arrival on Feb 3rd at Liverpool.

I'd love to know if they eventually settled in the UK or whether they returned to Canada.

I also am at a loss for her father PETER McMEEKIN (born 24 Nov 1879, Dalrymple, Ayrshire) . His last known address was 14 Duke Street, Hamilton, Ontario. (Wife-Marion) I also have some information that shows he worked as a salesman/clerk for The Ross Company on the main street in downtown Welland.

I am looking for information as to his date of death or indeed, whether he also remained in Canada or even returned to the UK.

I would be grateful for any help you can give me.
