Thanks Chris, I have ordered the marriage certificate, I also checked dad's birth certificate, to see name of father on it. Its is given as William Barnes, Comercial Traveler, Wireless and it gives my grandmother Eliza as Barnes nee Turner.

So I hope that the marriage cert for Cresswell can throw some light on her fathers name and where she was born.

Have a good weekend

Helen :-D

There are 4 Eliza Turner birth registrations in 1897

Eliza Turner
Prestwich 8d 361
Mar Q 1897

Eliza Turner
Mar Q 1897
Brentford 3a 133

Eliza Turner
June 1897
Pancras 1b 82

Eliza Turner
June Q 1897
South Shields 10a 744

In the 1901 census there is a Turner family living in Middlesborough who originate from Lancashire
Josia c1872
Mary E c1874
Alice A c1895
Eliza c1897

who could be the family you are looking for as you say your father was born in Middlesborough and the Eliza above could be the Eliza born in Prestwich but the only sure way to make sure you have the right family is to order the marriage certificate for Eliza Turner and Arthur Cresswell in 1947 to see who her father was.

When did Eliza die?

If it was after 1969, her birth date and birthplace should be on the death cert......allowing for the fact that any such info is only 'as known' by the informant

I can find your father's birth, and a possible birth for Eric (1926 in Leeds), but...................

No Barnes birth matching your info for the eldest boy..............

There is however, a birth in Leeds in 1922 for a Roy Turner, with MMN Turner

There is no marriage for William and Eliza.................

I cannot spot a William Barnes/Eliza Turner marriage 1915~1935 so perhaps your grandmother was the other partner.

May I suggest obtaining a birth certificate for one of their children to see what is indicated as William's occupation and address on that.

Find the births on freebmd.

Look on the same site for a possible marriage in the same district as the first one

I am researching William Barnes, my Paternal Grandfather. I have very little information on him, no date or place of birth, death or marriage to my grandmother.

I assume he would have been born circa 1890's as my grandmother Eliza Turner was born in 1897 ( again not known where)
William and Eliza had 4 children, Roy born in 1922, Eric born in 1925, my father Dennis born in 1927 and William born in 1929 and died in 1934.

My Father was born in Middlesborough and later lived in Leeds and lived at the Station Hotel, Leeds 5, where my grandmother worked.

On my parents marriage certificate it gives my grandfathers occupation as Commercial Traveler in wireless radios.

There was some talk that he may have had another partner and children,

Any one who may think that there could be a link with my grandfather please contact me.

Thanks

Helen :-)
