John James France 1901-1977 b. Runcorn, Cheshire. Married Eveline Johnson in 1931. Have checked but unsure if any children are born to this couple, any help would be most appreciated as always. Public library so restricted time limits.... Thanks

You could try FreeBMD.. I have had a look, there are some with the surname France born with mother Johnson...but not for Cheshire.

The only France-Johnson birth 1930-1950 within 20 m of Runcorn is: Births Mar 1937 (>99%) France Joseph S Johnson Wigan 8c 13
As you can see, I found this at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
However, you're quite right to ask as abt 30% of quarters 1939q4-1959q4 are incomplete at FreeBMD. What you need to do is search at Ancestry - I realize you don't have a sub, so you do a free search. Without a sub, you won't see full details - you'll get hits like:
Exact Search Results - England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005 View Record Name Date of Registration District County View Image Order Record View Record Joseph S France info year city Lancashire [image link] [shopping basket]
This is an old style search display (To get old style, select Search - Search all records from Ancestry's main banner bar. The old/new style switch appears at far right, just below the main banner bar.)
If I now click on the shopping basket for Joseph, it displays a filled-in order form which has all the details of the FreeBMD hit except the mum's MS. Since I enter Johnson as part of the search criteria, that's not a problem here. Close the order form window - you don't want Ancestry (nor any other firm) placing an order with the GRO for you - it'll more than double the cost over placing the order yourself.
Suppose I was doing a slightly different search - say for Joseph France, b 1937-ish, and I'd not gotten a hit on FreeBMD. I can go thru the above proceedure and find there's a hit rego'ed in 1937q1, but I'ld like to know the mum's MS.
Well, we're pretending FreeBMD hasn't transcribed it, but they do have pretty much all the images of the original printed index thru 1983q4, so I can look at that and do my own transcription of the Johnson bit. Go to FreeBMD's home page: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ and take the view images link - it's a klunky interface, but we know the worst bit from the order form - the date is 1937q1.

Was Johnson Eveline's maiden name?
Who registered John's death? It would appear that his wife pre-deceased him
Name: Eveline France Birth Date: 13 Apr 1904 Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1969 Age at Death: 65 Registration district: Runcorn Inferred County: Cheshire Volume: 10a Page: 1345
Looks like her maiden name was indeed Johnson........
Births Jun 1904 (>99%) Johnson Eveline Runcorn 8a 234

Born, married and died in Runcorn district - one would imagine any children would have been born there.
But, you can easily look for the info yourself on freebmd

Using http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/ Cheshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1931 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference FRANCE John J JOHNSON Eveline Runcorn, Holy Trinity Halton C11/4/175
Using FreeBMD: Marriages Sep 1931 (>99%) Beal Susannah Hughes Runcorn 8a 656 France John J Johnson Runcorn 8a 656 Hughes Frederick Beal Runcorn 8a 656 Johnson Eveline France Runcorn 8a 656
Now free on Ancestry - suppose I've found John and basketted his details. Now I look up a blank name & month y=1931 vol=8a p=656 Spouse=Fance
Exact Search Results - England & Wales, Marriage Index: 1916-2005 View Record Name Spouse Surname Date of Registration Registration district County (inferred) View Image Order Record View Record John J France surname info year city Cheshire --- View Record Eveline Johnson France info year city Cheshire

For d.certs, the GRO index item that's missing is the age (thru 1969q1). After 1969q1, the content of all BMD.certs changed a bit, and from 1969q2 on, what's indexed for d.certs is the dob.
Exact Search Results - England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2006 View Record Name Estimated Birth Year Date of Registration Registration district County View Image Order Record View Record Eveline France year info 1969 Runcorn Cheshire
Basketting her details shows her death was rego'ed in Dec. As an alternative to checking the image, if you've checked exact matches only in your Ancestry search box, you can repeatedly search for her dob. It was Apr 1904, but I didn't bother with the day. (Checking the image is the safer route.)
Incidentally, the GRO index started including dod in 1866q1, but ChesBMD gives it back to 1837 for deaths rego'ed in Runcorn. The also (always?/usully?) index marrs by entry #, so one knows who wed whom, even pre 1912. They're also retrofitting the mum's MS to all births, but I think all they've gotten done so far is some Stockport and Tameside births.
I know this post isn't what you asked, but I'm thinking it will let you do more at home (with more bother) and save your library access to Ancestry for stuff you can only do on that site.
