Hi Sylann,
I have looked in Trove but found no death announcement for him, but I did find an article in The Argus( Melbourne) dated 7 Oct 1856 under <Missing Friends, Messages ECT
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q=%22andrew%20gibb%20Murray%22

Do you recognise the others?

"ANDREW GIBB MURRAY and ALEXANDER MURRAY ALLEN
-WRITE TO JOHN BAIRD MURRAY AT POST OFFICE, CASTLEMAINE"

Will look again

Sorry I tried to edit/ amend before you responded.
It does indeed say : Andrew Gibb Murray!

So it means he was in Australia with his cousin.
Did you know this?

Sylann Report 8 Jul 2012 20:06

No I didn't I've only just started doing this part of the family

I wonder if John Baird Murray is Andrews brother and why did he want to contact them ? as far as I know John didn't go to Australia.
He married and had a family in Scotland

The plot thickens!!

Just seen on ancestry that Alexander Murray Allen had an unassisted passage to Australia but I can't access it

I doubt John Baird Murray was actually in Australia at the time.
Knowing his brother and cousin were in Victoria, he was trying to track them down via Castlemaine Post Office.
Either a letter or telegram will have been left for them.
Is the year 1856 significant for the family?

I cannot find any immigration, but what were their occupations in Scotland?
Trying to find them on 1856 Electoral Rolls
Were they miners?

Sylann,
There is no real info for unassisted passages but.....
The ship was the Red Jacket from Liverpool arriving Melbourne in Mar 1855.

16yr old Alexander Murray Allen and 24yr old Ander David Murray are both aboard the ship.
Oddly the nationality for both of them is entered as : Irish
There are many transcription errors on Anc records

Hopefully, someone on this forum may have a way of getting more info on this ship and its passengers.
Check threads for offers of assistance.
Cherilyn may be able to help you, especially with the death of Andrew 1858

Sylann,
30 yr old John Baird Murray WAS on that same ship from Liverpool to Melbourne.

I found it on another website.
All 3 men arrived Melbourne Mar 1855
Andrew is entered as Andrew Baird Murray
All are together Port B. Fiche 89. page 4
They are the only Murray and Allan's aboard the ship

If John married John must have returned to the UK.

Edit:
Are you sure that John Baird Murray married and had a family in Scotland?
