Hi George
I think you may be onto something, both marriages have a groom's fathers name as James and both are witnessed by the same people - James & Elizabeth Gates. In the 1841 census John is living at Stanwell Town with father James, sister Elizabeth Gates & her husband James Gates. I can't see a death in 1841, Staines registration, for a Mary Hazell. Nothing's straightforward is it!!

That would be great, thank you George. There's definitely something a little strange going on. Of course it would help if I could find the birth registraton for their son John Hazell c. 1842, I could then order the certificate.

Dont know if this helps, but looking at the original image, The John Hazell who married Mary Dibley it states he is a widower.

So is it possible this is the same person, and his first wife had died and he has married again, albeit in a short time after his first marriage to Lee.

If you would like the original images i can send them to you by the PM system.might give you a better idea

Thanks Adeline, I too have the same children. As I said to George the marriage dates seem to suggest that it should be Mary Dibley, although I was convinced it would be Mary Ann Lee because she came from Witney. It seems so strange that there are two marriages so close together with the same grooms fathers name as James

Thanks George
Yes very helpful, the marriage to Mary Ann Lee was on 16th May. The 1841 census was taken in June so I assume it must be the later marriage if John was single and living with his father. It must be the wrong Mary ann Lee living at Witney in 1841.
Many thanks for your hep

Two trees on Ancestry have Mary Ann Lee as his wife. Her dates are given as 1821-1908 and his as 1817-1899. There is also a photograph of their son Thomas.

Hello
I am looking for the marriage of John Hazell b.c 1817 at Stanwell, Middlesex to Mary Ann ? b.c 1817 at Witney, Oxfordshire. I have found two potential marriages on FreeBMD
Jun 1841 Staines to Mary Ann Lee
Sep 1841 Staines to Mary Dibley
I subscribe to FMP but have searched on Ancestry, the two marriages are there but I cannot see the details. I am hoping there is enough information to be able to eliminate one of them.
On the 1841 census Mary Ann Lee is in Witney, Mary Dibley is in Staines and there are two entries for John, one at an Inn in Stanwell and one with his father James at Stanwell. From 1851 onwards one John Hazell disappears and the other John and Mary Ann live in Stanwell until their deaths. Unfortunately I have been unable to find the birth registration for their son John (also my ancestor) b.c 1842 at Stanwell but if all else fails I could send for the birth certificate of one of their other children to find mother's maiden name.
Hopefully there will be enough information on Ancestry
I would be very grateful if anyone could help please
Barbara
