Robert Report 3 Jul 2012 21:13

Hit a brick wall. Looking for the parents of one Robert Poppleton , born around 1820 -possibly earlier, occupation a Blacksmith .
He was apparently resident with his wife for a time in North Shields, Northumberland , in 1855 approx , where and when his son Henry Poppleton was born . However son Henry was a little vague about his birthplace , as it may have been South Shields rather than North Shields.
It seems that Robert was alive at the time of the wedding of his son in 1878 to Elizabeth Jane Bennett. at St.Hilda's , South Shields, Co.Durham. Henry Poppleton was a sailor. Witnesses to the ceremony were :-
William Bulley , a First Officer or Mate.
and
Dorothy Ann Bennett.
Robert disappears after 1878.
Son Henry Poppleton re-appears in the 1891 Census , as a Bosun-sailor , aged 30 yoa , living as a boarder in a seaman's institute or lodging house in Whitechapel, London . However he declares himself single.
There was one child from the marriage of Henry & Elizabeth , a daughter Elizabeth Ann Poppleton , b 1879 in South Shields , Co Durham.
Would appreciate any help in identifying Robert Poppleton.
Regards , Bob Speight

Hi Everybody ,
Many thanks for your prompt replies.
I have traced Henry's wife and daughter and the marriage of hs daughter., but many thanks for the additional detail.
1) Patchem - Why do I think Robert was born around 1820 ? To be honest there is so little detail about him in the north east records (he is not on the 1841 , 51 , 61 or 1871 Census. I have not found a record of his marriage or of the birth of his son Henry in either North or South Shields. The only information I have is from the marriage cert of Henry , which gives Henry's age as 23 yoa. The latter , allowing his father two or three years establishment after his apprenticeship , gives a birth year of about 1820, . His birth year could be earlier or slightly later , I grant you , but I had to start somewhere. At the moment I only have two clues about Robert ,all of them from the marriage cert of Henry . All of which assumes that Henry was being truthful. First that Henry's father was definitely Robert Poppleton . Second , that Robert was a Blacksmith. From the lack of a paper trail relating to Robert , including the absence of a north east death cert /registration , suggests he may have travelled around in his occupation as a Blacksmith. Again from his occupation and that the father of Elizabeth Jane Bennett , was a Shipwright , some of Roberts work may have engaged Robert in marine work or even on board a ship.

2) AnnCardiff , PollyPoppet & Patchem. Interesting that you passed on information about Robert Poppleton of Doncaster. I have one record of a Poppleton who was a Blacksmith and who travelled around extensively in Cumberland and south Durham. However he (John Poppleton b c 1906 ) originated in Richmond, Yorks and settled in South Durham. He did not have a son Henry which fitted into the above time span . Most of my Poppleton blacksmiths seem to be in the Doncaster area and are railway related. My hunch is that you are probably right and that Robert maybe one of the Doncaster Poppletons , with the one at Kingston upon Hull as a possibility , however that elusive positive link to the north east Robert is missing.
