He is either Elija or Cornelius E on all census records. No mention of Louis. This man died in 1902.
How have you got back to your Cornelius (Louis) Sheppard?
Have you found him on the census under that name?
Did Louis marry under that name? If so, who and when?
If Cornelius was known as Louis in later life, then it looks like the son of John and Maria is not your man.

I have always thought his name was Louis but another family member has connect this Cornelius Shepherd as him. I am trying to establish one way or the other if they are one and the same or 2 different people.
The problem I have is that on the census when he is married to my GG Grandmother she is always the head of the family as a sailors wife this happens in the 1871, 1881as he is obviously away in 1891 she has married again but all the children are still Shepperds. I have presumed he has died.
Its so frustrating!

I definately think from all the info everyone has found that Cornelius Shepperd is not my man.
I will do some further work but I think if I go up this line I will be on a wild goose chase !
I need to work backwards from what I do know.
