Canadian 1911 Census Look-Up Please

From CH's post from FMP's "Passenger lists leaving UK 1890-1960" or somesuch, and from Ancestry's "Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935", we see she gets on the boat as Julia, and gets off as Lena (although that image is so poor, it's hard to tell what it says). It's not unusual for folk to alter their forenames when they come to N America, although I've never pinned it down to a 9-day timeslot before. In my family, it's usually been adding a mid-name, often a maiden surname of a rellie, or maybe changing from Francis to Frank in all circumstances - a complete forename change like you've got is rarer, but not unheard of.

If you've not seen Ancestry's image, there's a free version at LAC (I think with a lower resolution). Look up the ship at: in 1911 at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/001045-100.01-e.php
Pick the right trip, and you want image 5 of 17 - they're on the first 2 lines - the clearest part of their entry is the modification of Henry's intended occupation to "Civil engineer". Just to the left, you can see their intended destination is "Mont'l Quebec". Back on image 1, we can see that there were trains available to take them onward - Grand Trunk had a regular scheduled train that afternoon (to Quebec City?) and CPR laid on a special after lunch (to Montreal?).

Some 50+ years later, I came by boat to NY - we had 5 nights at sea, and 5 time zones to cross (Halifax is just 4) - it meant you could stay up late chatting and boozing, and still get up in time for breakfast - very civilized.

Hi mgnv,

Thank you so much for supplying the links so that I could look at the images. Although a lot of what is on the 1911 Census is the same as the information I have I don't think these are the same people. The name definately looks like Lelia.

The birth of Julia C.W. Moeser is correct as is the marriage to Henry Alderson. I know they travelled to British Columbia, Canada in January 1911 and if the journey by ship took months they may not have arrived in time for the census taking. Excuse my ignorance but are the dates for the Canadian census read as dd/mm/yy or mm/dd/yy?

Thanks again for your help

Janet

[I read her name as Lelia - not Julia - there's a John following the couple, and a Daughter preceeding, and the enumerator's J's & u's are ordinary]
[Ferndale is part of the Municipality of Mission, abt 70km E of Vancouver]
Nominal census day was 1/6/1911 - the actual enumeration was 3/6/1911 here, but was supposed to reflect the status on the nominal census day.

Marriages Jun 1902 (>99%)
Alderson Henry Spencer Fulham 1a 712
French Arthur Edward Fulham 1a 712
Moeser Julia Wilhelmina C Fulham 1a 712
WOODS Edith Emily Fulham 1a 712

Births Mar 1876 (>99%)
MOESER Julia Charlotte W Pancras 1b 6

With 6 wks to rego a birth, a Dec 1875 birth is not incompatble with a 1876q1 rego.

The birth date on the census for Lena is the correct one for Julia as she was born Dec 1875! I think it's too much of a coincidence for it not to be the right couple.

Thanks K :-D

Hi K,

Just seen the edit on your original post and Henry was a Civil Engineer so could well be the right person. His wife's name is the stumbling block though, unless it's a 'pet' name or a shortened version on Julia's middle name Charlotte. The death record is definately his though as I already have this info :-D

Thanks for the help.

Many thanks K. Unfortunately it's not the correct person. Was a long shot, but didn't pay off this time :-(

Is anything else supplied in Canada that is accessable like electorial registars etc?

I know Henry S Alderson emigrated to British Columbia in January 1911 with his wife Julia. It's possible that they were still travelling at the time of the Census, but was worth a try.

Hi all,

Could someone do a look-up on Ancestry for me in the Canadian 1911 Census please?

Henry S Alderson b 1874 Holdenby, Northants,England and looks to be residing at New Westminster, British Columbia in 1911.

Any information that is supplied on the Census would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Janet
