Hello, any ideas how I can do some research on the O'Reilly family of Wexford, Southern Ireland? They are incredibly secretive and are linked in on my maternal grandad's side.

Thanks.

Hi there - how far back have you got - full names and relevant dates and we'll see if we can help :-)

Thanks, My Grandfather is Patrick Phillips born 13 November 1917, his father was Thomas Phillips and I think his Mum was Marie/Molly O'Reilly :-) I'm looking for confirmation of his Mother's name and any brother's and sisters. I know that his Mum had quite a few different partners and children were born to nearly all of them.

Thanks again.

No marriage that I can see, do you think it would have been in Ireland?

I think he was born in Wexford, Southern Ireland :-) He married My gran eventually Margaret Phillips in Coventry but it was through Catholic Church. I would like to know if he had already married in ireland as is the theory?

Thanks :-)

well The Irish 1911 and 1901 are completely free
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

There's only 4 Thomas Phillips in Wexford on the 1901, 3 on the 1911....lots of O'Reillys though.

you really need Patrick Phillips birth cert for her full name.

Thank you, just in the process of looking into that :-) I actually think Patrick was born on the way over at sea and subsequently I guess he may have been registered in Swindon, not sure if Swindon has a port though or whether it used to!

No port in Swindon Benjamin, but this may help ( most likely that from Wexford they would come via Dublin to Liverpool I think).

"Roger Swift and Sheridan Gilley described three primary emigration routes in their book The Irish in the Victorian City:

"1. The Northern Route, from Ulster and North Connacht to Scotland;
2. The midland route, from Connacht and most of Leinster via Dublin to the North of England and the midlands;
and 3. The southern route, from South Leinster and the Munster Counties to London, often via Bristol." (Swift, Roger and Gilley, Sheridan, 1985, p. 15).

Thanks for that, very curious. Confirmed with Gran he was registered as born in Swindon though when his parents came over looking for work in 1917 - sadly too late for 1901/11 census though. Were there any later census's?

The 1921 census won't be available ( 100 year privacy ruling on that census) until 2021/2 unfortunately...us older people are hoping to be still around to see it lol, it may clear up a mystery for me too...but probably won't.

haha - every mystery that is solved opens another can of worms. I'm going to go back to Irish branch and try and do a bit more work on it, i've been looking at dad's side of the family a lot recently and now have a much more comprehensive tree on that side thanks to lots of people on here who have helped like yourself :-)

Thanks Rose - no doubt i'll end up posting something more in here when I inevitably get lost again!

There are some good tips and a great list of Irish sites, on Teresa's thread at the top of 'Genealogy chat' Benjamin, worth a look when you get into the Irish side more :-D
