I appear to have offended certain people on here by not replying in the correct manner, for which I apologise. I have not used this board before and obviously do not know the do's and do nots! So, to cause no further offence I will say thank you for the help so far given and endeavour to find the information I need by my own research.
regards Joyce

Because of the nature of the hospital is there any possibility that her family decided to tell others that she had died, when, in fact, she lived for a lot longer time?

Could you just confirm which is the correct birth entry for Patricia (do you know the full names of both her parents?)

Thank-you.

the Bromham hospital was in Bedfordshire

Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire Joint Board for Mental Deficiency used the house and its grounds to establish the Bromham Colony, later known as Bromham Hospital for people who were mentally handicapped.

The institution took a few years to become established. The first twelve patients were admitted on 16th July 1931 and patients were selected by the Joint Board. By 1937 this number had risen to 23, all men. The colony did not officially open until the next year but by the end of that year 48 men and 29 women were resident, a number which had risen to 80 and 114 respectively by the outbreak of war the following year.

The Colony included a school for children with learning difficulties which became Rainbow Special School. The Colony, which became known as Bromham Hospital in 1950,was transferred to the National Health service in 1948. By this time there were over 250 patients in total.

Every death has to be registered - it's the law - although, occasionally, records go astray between the district office and the GRO

When was she born?

Was Horwood her name when she died?

Where have you looked in trying to find her death?

I am attempting to find out where my cousin Patricia Horwood is buried. I cannot find any entry of her death but know she died about 1955/57. At the time of death she was a resident at Bromham Hospital in Bedfordshire, would this explain why there is no public record ?
