Trying to track down George Wollastan Worledge who married Mary Ann Girling 1855 Stepney. According to his children´s Christening details he was a shipwright. They had George Henry 1857, Charles Alexander 1859, Emily Mary 1860,Florence Theresa 1862 (d 1874) Eliza Agnes 1864 & Isaac John Bacon 1866. Can´t find any of them in 1861 but in 1871 Mary Ann turns up in Clarence Street Portsea with the children under the surnam of Girling, saying she is the wife of Charles Girling, a shipwright who is several years younger than her. George Wollaston Worledge died in Portsea in 1877, probate granted to his widow, Mary Ann Worledge of Clarence St Portsea. In 1881 she is in Suffolk as Worledge with son Isaac, living with Emily & her husband Philip Bucke. Have all the info I need for George Wollastan Worledge´s parents, but would love to know where he was between 1855 when they got married & 1877 when he died. Anyone up for it???

Florence Theresa Worledge was born in Greenwich in 1862, so persumably in that vacinity in 1861, rather than Portsea
Eliza was born Poplar 1864

yes Penny, that´s where I was looking, in the London area.
Thanks Maureen. Very helpful, but the plot thickens because I have the baptisms of all the children in the surname Worledge with George as their father. Also, they all married with the surname Worledge, Mary Ann was named as his widow in 1877 & she was living under the surname Worledge in 1881. Something odd here. Girling was her maiden name so presumably Charles is a relative although can´t identify him on earlier censuses. I did wonder if George had changed his name, but it doesn´t look likely. More likely that Charles is the father of some or all of the children.

George was definately born 1834, Ipswich:-
Name: George Woollaston Worledge Gender: Male Baptism/Christening Date: 15 Jan 1834 Baptism/Christening Place: ST CLEMENTS,IPSWICH,SUFFOLK,ENGLAND Father's Name: George Worledge
Father's Birthplace: Father's Age: Mother's Name: Eliza
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C13179-1
System Origin: England-ODM Source Film Number: 918524
..............which is what Charles Girling gives as his date and place of birth, and he also has the same occupation, so could it not be that the couple are hiding out, for some reason, under her maiden name as their surname, and George has taken the name of Charles so as not to be found????

That´s what I wondered too, but all the children right up to 1866 have their father as George Worledge at their baptisms.. Perhaps he didn´t think he should lie to the vicar. All seems very odd to me.

Wow. Thanks Catherine. For reference, George Wollaston Worledge was son of George Worledge & Eliza Bacon who married 10.4.1831 in Ipswich. George snr was a mariner & I have never tracked him down on a census. In 1841 Eliza & her children were living with her father Wollaston Bacon & her brother John who were also both mariners. Wonder if George/Charles was employed by the Royal Navy or if the hospital was used by everyone.

If George's mother was Eliza Bacon, then that would be the reason for one of Isaacs middle names being Bacon.

Ye. it´s also the reason that George Worledge´s middle name is Wollastan, after his grandfather.
