Hello, Roger Heaton is my name, born in Australia 1951 and I believe I am the great-grandson of the above via his son Thomas b1874 to a Susannah Heaton (Baron) b1839-1879. Thomas birth place is given as "Lester" Donnington, Lancs, near I believe to his mother's family. Ifeel he has an older brother Edward ?b1835 and younger siblings. (Since I asked on the thread, it should really have been answered on the thread - well, it is now, eh)

An 1861 look up on Ancestry gets:

I can't see the original image - possibly the enumerator has been a bit over-enthusiastic with ditto marks - the previous 11 and next 5 on the page all had pob=Lancs.

I think (as did the FreeCEN transcriber) that Lester is Thomas's spelling of Leicester, copied as it stood by the enumarator from Thos's completed form into the summary book.

I think FreeCEN got it right - if I search for my grandad and give his pob=Kendal Westmorland I really don't want the search to fail just because he spelled it as Kendall or Westmoreland or Westmoorland or whatever.

It seems pretty clear (to me) that Thomas is claiming one of the Leicester Doningtons as his pob.

Course, just because there's no Donnington marked on a modern map of Lancs, not even a trace of one in the records, doesn't mean there wasn't such a place 170 y ago.
Seems like Roger'll be off on one of those quests, like people who search for the site of Camelot or Atlantis.
