Rose May Tooby of Nottingham...?

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Does anyone live in Nottingham who could help me confirm which Rose May Tooby this is, please? I seem to be spending a fortune on certificates that are wrong and cannot keep doing... sadly :(

The info I have is:
born - 1904
death - 2001 Nottingham

I know my Isaac Tooby married one Rose May Lewis in 1937 and their marriage cert dated her age as 33 so DOB would be right. They never divorced, so she may well have kept his name..? And I cannot find any other Rose May Tooby being born in that year. So if anyone could help with a death notice or any other info....

Thanks.

What was Rose Lewis's father's name?

And his occupation, and witnesses to the marriage please? I see they married Hinckley Leics, is that right?

Death index:

Rose May Tooby
Birth Date: 19 Nov 1904
Date of Registration: Feb 2001
Age at Death: 96
Registration district: Nottingham
Inferred County: Nottinghamshire
Register Number: A72A
District and Subdistrict: 6891A
Entry number: 28

But I think your Rose May Lewis was registered in the second quarter of 1904?

It only gives his name as William Lewis (deceased). Yes they wed in Hinckley. Witnesses were: Wilfred Moore and Ethel George.

I found the death on Ancestry as Rose May Tooby for February 2001.

The thing is, if this IS my Rose May Tooby, she obviously never re-married and lived alone... so her DOB on death cert may be incorrect... yes?

Yes, the informant may have guessed.

I can't see any children from the marriage, so its possible that the informant wasn't a close relative.

Thanks Guys!!! This is one thread of my tree I am struggling to get started... as I only have her DOB and father's name - from marriage cert - no actual mention or suggestion of where they actually came from, in order to get back further.

Darren, what was William Lewis' occupation on Rose's marriage certificate?

Did she and Isaac separate (you said they never divorced)?

Darren

Darren Report 24 Jun 2012 17:50

Hi MarieCeleste
It just says William Lewis (Deceased) although I did send away for the one birth cert that matched her DOB and that had him listed as a 'master mariner' in Lewisham... but I cannot confirm these are the correct Lewis family.

Darren, to re-cap. The birth cert for Rose Lewisham has same DOB and father's name. It surely must be her.
What is the address on the birth cert, and who is her mother please.

Yes Isaac and Rose separated...

On the birth cert it says father: William Arundel Lewis (Master Mariner) -
mother: Edith Kathleen Lewis (formerly Martin)
residing at "Clovelly", Brockley Grove, Brockley.

I have actually found them in 1911 census but was hoping for more details on the death would help to confirm all this.

I might have lost the plot, but I take it you do not have the death cert? I would get this to be honest. If the informant knew her birthplace it will be recorded. Not sure what else you can do.

Actually Jan... I cannot really afford to buy any more certs... especially if they turn out to be the wrong ones... :(
I was hoping, seeing as we all feel the financial pinch when bmd certs are required to further our research, that maybe someone may live in the Nottingham area who might be able to back track the local newspapers for me and, hopefully find a death notice..? I have helped several fellow researchers in this way, who have needed info from the Leicestershire area. It is a great way of cutting costs.
