The marriage in 1897 Bedwioth is interesting is there by any chance an occupation. The jospeh lee in my Tree was a Hawker. I have only found his son Samuel on one census so not sure about Samuel's age anywhere between 1862-1871?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 18 Jun 2012 20:41

Cheryl, I've added that info above. The father's occupation doesn't match.

Why not tell us more about Joseph and we can try tracing Samuel that way - there was more than one of that age and name in Warwickshire.

Andrew

Andrew Report 18 Jun 2012 20:42

Both Samuel and Joseph are Colliers on the marriage record.

Joseph Lee is a Gypsy/Hawker on 1911 Census he is in Ashford, Staines Mddx. a widower. This is the first time i have come across his son Samuel Lee. There is a Lezzie Lee as well, I am not sure if she is a daughter of Jospeh or a wife of Samuel. There is also an Emmanuel/Manuel Lee who i believe is Samuel's son and Joseph's Grandson. Samuel is down as being born in Mitcham surrey i believe. Only have an index for 1911 on this family. Cheryl

LEE, Manuel Son Single M 27 1884 Hawkins Worcestershire
LEE, Samuel Son Single M 50 1861 Hawkins Mitcham Surrey
LEE, Lezzie Daughter Single F 39 1872 Hawkins Sussex

** Where would a Warwickshire marriage have fitted with this?

On the original image the daughter's name is Lizzie.

Joseph has entered his late wife's name as Porterbella Lee and she was 59. They had completed 48 years marriage (I'm assuming those years would be to the time of her death). They'd had 3 children, 1 had died (which doesn't fit with three living children on the record - unless he's also entered the details of the deceased child).

Cheryl Report 18 Jun 2012 20:59

The 1911 census has errors Manuel Lee is not the son of Joseph. Josephs son Emmanuel/Manuel Lee was born in 1872 Southam, Warwickshire. In 1911 he has his own Household with wife Alice and sons Joseph 1894, Emanuel 1897, Walter 1901 and John 1905 in Ashford staines. Thats why i believe Manuel born 1884 would be Samuel's son, possible Lezzie could be Samuel's wife. This is the first i have come across her.

The Family were Gypsy/Travelers so traveled. Warwickshire, Worcesershire, Surrey. So i have to look for marriages in all the known places they travel.

Thanks for looking up the original info. that helps. Samuel son with him, Emanue/Manuel living with his wife alice and family. I believe there was possibly a daughter Caroline Lee who died possibly the Walter Stevens living with Joseph is his grandson, possibly Carolines son. That is another lead i am looking into.

Cheryl

Cheryl Report 18 Jun 2012 21:11

I have Josephs Marriage and his wifes Baptism, also Joseph and his siblings baptisms.
Its trying to sort out Samuel Lee and possibly Caroline Lee who may have died. Lezzie? where does she fit in. The gypsies called Daughter in laws Daughter. Grandsons were sometimes called nephews?

MarieCeleste Report 18 Jun 2012 22:11

Ho Cheryl, I've looked again at the original of that 1911. On it, Manuel's age is quite clearly 39 and not 27. Looks like Joseph listed all of his family on the form, whether they were still with him or not.

Lezzie (who I stated earlier was actually Lizzie) - could she be the one that died? Hard to say what Joseph meant when he filled the form in.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that Joseph hadn't completed the marital status column for his three children. It looks like "single" was therefore assumed by the census officials. Also, it looks like he put Manuel's birthplace as Woricshire (Warwickshire) which has been transcribed as Worcestershire.

I've sent you a pm with the original census form so you can have a look for yourself.
