Thats a good point, which would also make sense of the different spellings if there was a strong Irish accent and they couldn't spell, maybe I will have to look at the 1841 and see if he is on there.

Lots of people couldn't read or write so its was up to the registrar how he heard names and how he would spell them . Not being able to read people would accept any certs and not know if they were right or wrong.

Sorry the info I had from 2008 was for the Bottomleys not the Lynes, I had read my info wrong and couldn't edit it quick enough.

However I still haven't got info on John Lynes junior from 1851 as mine was born in Huddersfield according to later census and the info kindly put on here for me says this Lynes was born in Ireland.

i would like to know how Lynes became Lyons it was probably just the accent but when Sarah Hannah married in Manchester she put Lyons as her surname but her birth cert is Lynes very confusing.

On the 1851 with John snr married to a Martha was the surname Lyons or Lynes that you found in 2008. Are you sure he was married to a Martha?

Thank you for the death of what maybe my John Lynes, I will look to getting the cert.

i've only just found out that both father and son were called John when I got his marriage cert. I'm hoping to visit Huddersfield records office soon and see if i can find the birth of John in 1835.

Sorry at the last moment I realised I had put 1851 census and couldn't edit it quick enough sorry!
I got info from the 1851 in 2008 when John snr is married to a Martha but I don't know his job then, John jner was born in Huddersfield according to later census about 1835/1838, but on his marriage cert it states he is 20.
As there seem to be a few Lynes families I,m not sure hoiw to narrow it down to mine. Hope that makes sense.
