thanks "Annielaurie"
I think that he did leave the army before 1920 and I can't find his records on Ancestry so it does look like they haven't survived

The link Darren posted is only for soldiers who left the Army after 1920. If he left before then and his records aren't on Ancestry then it looks as though they haven't survived.

Hi Terence
You can apply for his service records for a charge of £30. As long as you have his full name and DOB, a service number isn't always necessary (they found my Grandfather's without one).

The James P Smith mentioned by Glitter Baby and Potty may be my Grandfather. I have looked for the service and pension record on Ancestry for 57642 Driver or Corporal James P Smith who served with the Royal Field Artillery but no joy.
Does anyone have any suggestions where I could look for his records.

Yes I believe the "Steward merchant service" refers to him having been in the merchant navy. Unfortunately the merchant navy records 1900 - 1913 were destroyed!

His middle name was Peter
His fathers name is shown as Daniel on his marriage certificate (Deceased)
His fathers rank/profession is shown as R.S.M. 6th R.H.A.
Which I believe refers to him being the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 6th Brigade Royal Horse Artillery.

Terence - do you know where and when your grandparents died?

Their deaths records may show actual birth dates which might then help us find records. (With a name like Smith we need all the clues we can get!).

Does the marriage cert list his father's name and occupation?

His medal card is on Ancestry:

Regimental Number: 57642

He received the Victory, British and 1915 Star medals. He served in France and arrived there on 28.7.1915 and at sometime became a corporal.

Hi, I'm looking for information about my Grandfather, James Smith. The only information I have is that he was a "Driver" in the Royal Field Artillery stationed at Shoeburyness in 1917, I do not know his regiment.
While at Shoeburyness he married a local girl, Rose Violet Turnage 16/6/1917, they subsequently had a baby (Hubert James) 14/12/1917 at which time they were living at 1 Dane Street, Shoeburyness.
I am looking for any information about his military service e.g. his army number, when and where he enlisted, other postings etc. I am also looking for information about where he was from, his parents etc.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
