Hi i am looking for Thomas Hollingsworth 1846 i have been told born in Herefordshire England he was a master optitian and his wife Elizabeth Carroll they had a son Name William and they must have moved to scotland at some point as this is where william gets married can anyone help please

Not seeing a birth in Herefordshire.

There's one in Hartforshire in 1844, but he was a librarian in 1881

I can't see the marriage of Thomas & Elizabeth nor can I find the family on any census.

Can we start with son William and work backwards.

When and who did he marry ? ( you said it was in Scotland so you must have some record)

How old was he at marriage ?

Did he name Thomas as his father ? If so is this where you got his occupation ?

How do you know Thomas was born 1846 ?
Have you got the family on any censuses ?

William's parents may not have moved to Scotland just because he married there. My sister married in England but neither my parents nor any of her siblings have ever lived in England.

As Mike has said we need to start with William.

If William's mother's maiden surname was Carroll, then it was quite possible that she was Irish?

I have a PM from Elizabeth and access to her tree. I have found William in 1891. He married Jessie Gordon in 1884 but it doesn't make things any easier. I will direct Elizabeth back to here. In the tree Thomas Hollingsworth is a brush maker.

In 1901 he seems to become Alfred. I'm sure this is the same family.

Could this be the birth of the eldest son? Did they marry in Ireland?

It certainly seems to be the same family in the two census above but quite a disparity in the head of household details. Might Jessie/Jeanie have married one brother after the other died?

According to her tree they married in Glasgow.

I think William was William Alfred Gordon so this is maybe him

Forget my comment above about Jessie marrying brothers - this explains the name changes (but not the occupation change or birthplace!)

Astra - that birth would make sense - William Alfred after himself and G for Gordon from Jessie's maiden name.

When I first began looking at this earlier today I thought this was him. I'm still not sure that it isn't but I can't find him before or after.
