Checking WWI Deaths in tracking a relative, I was given:

1. Edwin STEEL Army OR 1917
2. Edwin STEEL Officers 1917

As missed deadline for that Credits offer last night, can any kindly GR spare a peek for me please? This would fit in nicely with his Widow's remarriage and new Family arising. I'm not sure if O or OR but he would have enlisted N/Yorks from my notes and was given as a Travelling Salesman b.1894 SCARBOROUGH m. in THIRSK where he operated from?

This seems to be Edwin as PICKERING is a Family Focal for us all! I'll chase from this now as he my Wife's G/Father (MATERNAL) and here a surprise search for our '53 Wedding Anniversary'! It will also assist new founds of that particular Line who are also searching!

NB: As Military, these things mean much to me as my Father was in France & Belgium 1914-1919 and went on throught WWII til 1955! CHEERS! <3

The 2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) was in Malta in August 1914 when war broke out, they returned to England landing at Southampton on the 25th of September to join 23rd Brigade, 8th Division at Hursley Park near Winchester. After training they proceeded to France landing at Le Havre on the 5th of November 1914, a much needed reinforcement to the BEF.
The 2nd Battalion remained on the Western Front throughout the conflict, seeing action at Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge and Bois Grenier during 1915, in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, in te eretreat to the the Hindenburg Line and the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917, on the Somme, the Aisne, the Second Battle of Arras and the Final Advance in Artois in 1918.

What can I say here? I was about to check Deploys with the Regt-Museum and now I find a special link in that my Father also survived Neuve Chappel and the Somme along with others twice over, a personal coincidence for us both in this...........huge 'THANKS' not forgetting the reference added! :-)

You shouldn't be paying for credits to find out which is the one you want - are you aware of the Commonwealth War Grave site where you can see the details for free and download a memorial certificate if you would like one?

There 'may' be some additional details to be found on pay for view sites but it is certainly useful to look on here first.
