Franbell, when you clicked "Add Topic" to start this thread did you not notice that right near the top of the board there is a thread called "Absolute Basics for Beginners" - that might have been a good starting point

Do a google search for a good book about the subject, or go on a course run by a local education authority. Or buy a magazine.

Start from the 'facts' you already know - i.e. your parents, then grandparents etc. and we can work back until we get to census's.

Glenys, start with yourself! Add your parents and whatever other relatives you know.

Use FreeBMD to find records http://www.freebmd.org.uk

Order certificates on-line from GRO - you need them to prove you have the right people http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Always work from facts and don't believe what other people have in their trees unless they can prove it.

This is a useful site for Lancs. http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html
