Welcome Sheila.

This is a good ask.

There must have been a good relationship for her to come back to care for your mom.

Others will know more about electoral roll chances but off the top of my head is a search on FreeBMD by first name only for that area and try not to let your fingers get cramped with all that crossing them.

The question is though, if she was known as Tilly but that wasn't her real name, how big the chance of finding the right death. I'm only able to think of Tilly as short for Matilda but there must be others.

Maybe by the time I have finished my slow typing, someone will have found the immigration record for her :-D

The only other idea, if all else fails, and we can't find her for you, is that you make a start on your tree. Build it as much as you can and with luck, she will show up that way.

If you can find out what area her death would have been registered under, I don't mind trawling through FreeBMD for a Tilly or Matilda.

This is the sort of challenge we all love on here. ;-)

chapman Report 26 May 2012 16:12

My grandpa was born 5th Dec.1889. My mother was born 23rd Oct.1913.My mother was brought up by her beloved 'Aunt Tilly' whose last name l am trying to find. l think she was a distant relative to my grandpa.
They lived in W.10 - Portabello Rd. There were Stopps members living there from about 1911-1927. l think 'Tilly' died in 1927/28/29, she would have been about eighty. 'Tilly' came over from America to look after my mother, she would have been in her sixties then. 'Tilly' had gone over to America as a dancer in her youth. If anyone has any information l would be very grateful. I need to have her on my family tree for my mothers sake!.
A lady called Wilma found my mother's aunts full name - Matilda Amelia Bellamy (Tilly) born not sure 1849/58 in Kensington do not think it was Birmingham? died 1929 in Kensington (absolutely sure about that). l tried all night to find her in passport applications coming back from America in about 1916. no luck so far. l think she came back on the Queen Mary. Initially 'Tilly' went out to America as a dancer but do not know what year. Thankyou to everyone who has helped me so far as l know time is precious!.

Sheila.
