William Gimlett married 3 times:
He was widowed in 1851, then Mary, then Margaret.
This might not help in finding the connection, but you need to find all the marriages, siblings, parents, to see if there is a loose connection somewhere.

How can you be sure that the first marriage was childless - any children could be living with her parents in 1851?
e.g.
Births Jun 1847
GIMLETT William Abergavenny 26 18
GIMLETT William Abergavenny 26 48
Births Dec 1848
Gimlett Mary Ann Abergavenny 26 13
Births Dec 1850
GIMLET Eleanor Abergavenny 26 20

Because of the large number of deaths and remarriages I think you need a large sheet of paper and to work your way through all the permutations.

Just for reference:

A man may not marry his:

1 Mother
2 Daughter
3-4 Grandmother
5-6 Granddaughter
7 Sister
8-9 Half Sister
10 Mother-in-Law
11 Step-Daughter
12 Step-Mother
13 Daughter-in-Law
14-15 Step-Grandmother
16-17 Grandmother-in-Law
18-19 Step-Granddaughter
20-21 Granddaughter-in-Law
22-23 Aunt and Half Aunt
24-25 Niece and Half Niece

The above is the up-to-date version of the list - the earlier ones were much more wide-ranging.

For the full list(s), look at

You may need to consider that these two children were in no way related to Towne - their descriptions as nephew and niece may simply have been terms of affection - in fact as he later married the girl, they couldn't have been related, unless he was a law-breaker

Thank you. So William Gimlett married Marry Davies 1855 and Margaret Waters 1877..majority of children from Mary. Thank you. I wonder where the Coslett middle name comes from for Edmund and Kate? Could it be their maternal Grandmothers name? sonya
